Despite a few shortcomings, Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes is an engrossing journey. Fans and newcomers to the franchise can enjoy the gifts this game offers. Feeling small and powerless is an experience that makes one appreciate life in the adult world. It also gives a new appreciation of how children feel about the world. This game’s VR heightens all these feelings found in the Little Nightmares universe. If you like games of suspense and mystery with a tinge of scary, check this one out.

By and large, Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes succeeds in adapting the series for headsets, though it’s disheartening that it repeats mistakes from past titles. But, if you already like Little Nightmares, you’ll absolutely enjoy the two hours you spend with this.

The plot of Altered Echoes is a fever dream, and I mean that in a good way. Even after the credits roll, I still don’t quite understand what just happened, but that’s pretty much how it has to be in a Little Nightmares game. It expands on the lore, picks up on creepy nightmare motifs, and presents an unreal world where you can never be sure what’s coming next. That’s exactly what I expect from a game in this universe, which is why I’m very satisfied with the experience despite the lack of a coherent narrative. It’s just a shame that the technical shortcomings noticeably dampen the fun.

Six is back, and this time the nightmare feels bigger and more personal than ever. The VR experience is highly immersive, pulling you into its twisted world. It’s scary, haunting, and adventurous, though during intense moments the controls can feel slightly clunky and break immersion.

Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes does a great job bringing the 2.5D “dollhouse” perspective of the series to a fully fleshed out VR world, complete with grotesque enemies, simple puzzles, a mysterious narrative, great graphics, and fun VR mechanics. While the campaign is short, even by Little Nightmare’s standards, it is worth experiencing, and features some of the most surreal and exciting set pieces yet for the series during its final chapter.

Being fully immersed in a Little Nightmares space works great. The atmosphere does that heavy lifting, and some of the freakier drawn-out moments really stuck with me. It just feels like it stops short of doing something more with the idea.

By abandoning its iconic diorama perspective for a generic and clunky first-person view, Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes completely loses the soul of the franchise. Plagued by frustrating climbing mechanics, snap-turning issues, and an empty fan-service narrative, this short two-hour hide-and-seek experience fails to capture the tragic melancholy of the original games. Despite decent sound design and the inherent immersion of VR, it remains a deeply disappointing transition.

It's impossible not to perceive Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes as a huge wasted opportunity. This is because, despite the project's solid foundation, it never manages to capture the attention of the player, even becoming boring during the two hours it takes to complete. Altered Echoes reflects the current VR gaming industry. An industry that, after innovating the language of video games, has reveled in the same gameplay mechanics for years, hiding its flaws behind famous brands or iconic comic book characters. Yet, this time, it wasn't enough. Bandai Namco's franchise wasn't enough to create a title worthy of attention, destined to end up in the generic melting pot of VR horror games. This, however, shouldn't be seen by software houses as an "end," but as a "new beginning."
