Ex Astris is a premium mobile RPG with a one-of-a-kind mix of real-time and turn-based combat. The lack of controller support can be a bummer, and the complicated combat mechanics take some getting used to. But if you're tired of your typical gacha game, this compelling single-player title can be a complete steal.

This game has bar none the best worldbuilding I've ever seen in any project. It's all presented in such an intelligently restrained way, with incredible detail in every corner, from the architecture to the clothing to the biology. This game excels at knowing what not to show; You will have to extrapolate what a character is thinking from facial expression alone, or infer a character's past from wider context, and it works wonderfully. The characters are all incredibly layered, the story is very very thought-provoking and full of themes to dissect, the music is amazing, the setting and environments are genuinely beautiful, and there was a surprising amount of lesbian love and feminist themes portrayed. Despite the appearance of the Allindish, Ex Astris has some of the most alien-feeling aliens I've seen in a work from how much focus is given to the culture. The combat is also full of depth and very fun, never getting old- my only complain regarding it is that I wish the game went on for longer so I could take full advantage of it! This game is a true masterpiece, and deserves to be ported to PC.

The playtime is relatively short, and the story is perplexing with Hypergryph-style terms and an ambiguous narrative. However, the combat design that breaks away traditional turn-based RPG frame makes the game exceptional enough to overlook the issues with the narrative.

Ex Astris is a very solid start for Nous Wave Studio and worth picking up for anyone willing to sink their teeth into a deep combat system on the go or wanting to experience a mobile JRPG without the gacha looming in the background.

Normally, games in a state like this leave me middled more than anything, but Nous Wave Studio’s first attempt at a premium, stand-alone JRPG in a gacha-saturated market, while a bold move, was a fruitful one. While the characters definitely need more seasoning and flavor, I especially would like to see the worldbuilding done a bit more elegantly than just dropping hot loads of info shovelfuls at a time. Yet, for all the problems I had with the worldbuilding and characters, the combat and general gameplay can carry Ex Astris alone. The visuals are stunning for a mobile game, the mechanics and systems baked in are so much fun, and the overall aesthetic designs of the world of Allindo are vibrant and unique. While off to a slightly rough start, I feel confident in saying that Nous Wave Studio’s first release has a lot going for it that makes it worth experiencing for fans of the anime RPG genre.
