I dreamt of the next Dark Messiah of Might & Magic and I got Elderborn. It has been a long time since I spent two nights in a row playing a game and there’s only multiplayer mode that’s lacking here. [04/2020, p.56]

Elderborn is almost a good game. It's got most of the ingredients that would require, such as strong visuals, tight gameplay, and varied enemies. But the placement of those enemies is so terrible and ill-conceived that it basically ruins the entire game. That along with a third act that feels like the game just gives up do a whole lot to damage what could have been a very compelling experience.

I am very surprised this game was as good as it was. It has some jank, sure, but not nearly enough to break it and its level design is exceptional. The game basically has two giant environments, one open world and one linear. These areas are interlooping and provide great shortcuts. Combat is basically soulslike but in fps, and it works surprisingly well. Weapons feel different and enemies hit hard, but it works, because the game has a generous bonfire system, so it's not as demanding as Dark Souls. I really enjoyed learning enemy attack patterns and learning the level layout and enemy locations. It's indie, but it has interesting mechanics, and distinct enemies with a cool art style. The final part on the other hand felt like an afterthought, the game runs out of its ideas and just adds old enemies. Kinda anticlimactic, but overall pretty nice game.

Everything about this game screams unfinished. Everything is tedious and clunky, from annoying traps, to floaty controls, to tutorial messages that stop the game. And they knew it's bad because as a last-ditched effort they made the default character a poster girl for a certain political movement.

This game is a hell of a lot of fun! It's not perfect, and ordinarily i wouldn't rate it as high as a 9, but it tries to do something new and fun with a focus on enjoying yourself. The story seems a little grim and cliche, but I found myself invested in the world to a surprising degree. Lots of fun, recommend you support a burgeoning indie studio and check it out.

ELDERBORN is yet another DARK SOULS clone, only in first person point of view instead of third. The gameplay mechanics are the exact same. Take away DARK SOULS' superb level design, dark fantasy atmosphere and exquisite storytelling and add a bright neon color palette and you have ELDERBORN. The graphics reminded me of UNDERWORLD: ASCENSION (and that is NOT good!). The souls mechanics are here, too: every enemy can kill you in a few hits, you need to manage your stamina - so far so good, those are good mechanics. But then you have the stupid mechanics where enemies are rooted into a fixed location, once you rest (fountains are ELDERBORN's bonfires) they all respawn. Not a fan of this! At least they did away with the "souls" system. This game is average at best. I did not care for the graphics and art style.

Весьма необычный souls-like, выделяющаяся стилем игры от 1 лица. Неплохо зацепила поначалу, но до конца так и не прошел.

SummaryWelcome to the world of ELDERBORN – a first person slasher game that will test your resolve, skill and reflexes. It’s also one hell of a joyride with slaughtering enemies in melee combat to the rhythm of heavy metal riffs.
