D-topia

D-topia is an intriguing adventure about humanity, society and living in a society where happiness for the majority is guaranteed. As it tries to emphasize those who are left behind by this, it ends up with a story that feels more sanitized than it should have been with relatively easy answers. This isn’t enough to compromise how thought-provoking the setting is, but it could have gone an extra mile for its concept to resonate with people further.

D-TOPIA is an indie adventure game that follows the story of a Facilitator, a facility administrator living in a distant future utopia operated entirely by AI. Depending on the player's choices, the paradise they oversee can either remain a 'Designed utopia' or descend into a 'dystopia'. While the game explores deeply philosophical themes, its deliberately slow-paced progression may prove divisive among players.

D-Topia is a puzzle-based conversational adventure that offers a pleasant, relaxing experience. While it provides intellectually stimulating moments—thanks to both its narrative and its puzzles—it fails to leave a lasting impression; this is because it never delves deeply into the many themes it introduces, and the moral dilemmas it presents aren't truly dilemmas at all. It seems to avoid making the player uncomfortable with their choices—much like it avoids challenging the player in any other aspect—a quality that appears to be intentional. The routine nature of its structure, gameplay mechanics, plot, and audiovisual presentation combine to create an experience that is engaging if the subject matter appeals to you, yet—much like the aesthetic of modern consumer technology—it is, and aims to be, bland.

D-topia is a lovely narrative adventure that presents us with a world controlled by artificial intelligence where we have to solve the problems of the inhabitants by talking to them, making decisions and solving different logic puzzles.

D-topia is an intriguing puzzle game that cleverly explores the line between utopia and dystopia. Its unsettlingly perfect world and AI-driven themes create engaging dilemmas around control, safety, and freedom of choice. The puzzles fit the mechanical setting well and grow more challenging, though they could have used more visual variety. The residents ultimately become the heart of the game, with strong personal stories and meaningful choices, even if interaction outside of dialogue and tea parties feels limited. Still, D-topia is a strong, timely, and technically polished experience that leaves a lasting impression through its setting and characters.

If nothing else, though, D-Topia's at least good for some fun logic puzzles. If you like puzzles with some story wrapped around them, you can certainly do worse.

D-topia has some great ideas, asks some big questions and narratively pushes the player to make some interesting choices that – in spite of the deceptively cozy artstyle – get surprisingly dark. While there are solid ideas and elements, D-topia became like a chore I had to complete, and as with any structured routine we’re forced to endure, I couldn’t help but start daydreaming about doing anything else.
