Dune: Part One5
Nov 8, 2021
This new version of Dune has turned agreat work of imagination and adventure into a boring documentary. As a minimum I was hoping it would improve on the first Dune movie which had its own flaws, but that was not to be. The actors are deadpan, the visuals bleak and grey, the entire production is underwhelming and without sparking any wonder or awe at the amazing sand planet and its creatures and characters. I don't understand why this version has received any positive reviews. I don't think anyone who has read the novel and watched the first movie version could prefer this lumpen lifeless portrayal of the fabulous Dune story.

So bad, we walked out halfway through. Boring, listless tale of the lives of bar patrons is not lifted by giant marionette connection. Waste of time and money.

Excellent across the board. Great plot, solid acting, and wonderful camera work make for a totally engrossing and entertaining film. And beneath it all runs a brilliantly dark sense of humor. My kind of movie.

Nonsense science coupled with a glacial pace of events and dull, predictable dialogue makes for a stinker of a movie. Luckily I was able to catch a long nap during the endless tedium of this artless lump of a movie so I was spared some of the pain. For any serious fans of hard scifi based even loosely on current theory, this is a waste of time.

Totally improbable dystopian fable. Good scifi must contain probable or at least possible technology. This one never explains what powers the engine or how the tracks survive decades of high speed use in artic conditions with no maintenance. Of course a really good story would allow me to forgive "magical" technology. But this one is a heavy-handed, plodding allegory of class warfare. The predictable progress from one end of the train to the other is achingly tedious. The ending of this scientifically ignorant production is perfect. It shows the majestic maritime polar bear roaming an alpine landscape.

A great premis for a scifi tale, but the truly unbelievable element is what a pansy this guy is. He stinks of PC and sensitivity. This dude is totally lacking testosterone. No wonder the computer finally ditches him. The most intriguing part is the rapid evolution of the cyberbeings as they interact and leave humanity behind. Of course that gets short shrift so we can watch the PC eunuch find himself some more.

There are no mind boggling horrors or astonishing new concepts presented in this prequel to Alien. But it does fill in the blanks on the "space jockey" and provides some really wonderful vistas of space exploration.
The story and acting are no better than average yet it still managed to entertain a lifelong scifi fan like me. For viewers without a soft spot for the genre, the film will be a disappointment.

The Hunger Games2

The entire plot is based on the illogical premise that the games will keep the masses cowered and docile. But forcing two citizens from each region into lethal combat for public display and entertainment is a sure way to stir the populace into revolt and to make martyrs out of the participants. The random selection of contestants makes the slaughter of children inevitable, which would further inflame the populace. But this is just the beginning of a whole string of illogical plot developments that overwhelmed my ability to suspend disbelief. The film's robotic acting and dialogue make the moronic plot even more unbearable. I suspect that the producers knew they could profit by showing attractive young
actors running around in futuristic costumes trying to kill each other and not have to bother with meaningful content or story. Hunger games left me starving for an engaging story or characters.

Definitely worth seeing. Very straight forward premise: combat marines react to sudden alien invasion. "What are these things? We gotta kill these things. How do you kill these things? " Refreshingly, there's no attempt to reason with the threat. The action sequences are outstanding and plentiful. The dialogue is pro Marine Corps and endorses their **** it up and get it done philosophy. This movie is a slap in the face to Obama's "let's talk about it" , do nothing diplomacy. No wonder the critics hate it.
