The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin9
Nov 18, 2014
Although, I don't care for the title of the documentary, which is pure hubris, the actual documentary is quite good as the filmmaker most definitely has excellent access to big players within the bitcoin world. The bitcoin people all come across as motivated, sincere, and gifted in intelligence. The government and bank authorities interviewed do a commendable job too in outlining their positions. The upshot of bitcoin, is it is a digital currency and unfortunately for bitcoin proponents, because the authorities want to regulate bitcoin as if it is a bank, they have to behave as if they are subject to these same laws without having the experience or background in actual banking. That is why Charlie Shrem suffers the indignity of being prosecuted for money laundering. Then there are other entrepreneurs in bitcoins that have lost control of their bitcoins to cybertheft or outright theft by insiders or those that have compromised the bitcoin exchange system. Unfortunately, for innocent investors that have lost their bitcoins there is no realistic recourse to ever get them back. Through it all, you must admire the effort, drive, and determination that the overall bitcoin world has brought to bear and to demonstrate to us that the old-school way of banking, is not the only way that banking need be conducted, that digital currency with integrity of its currency has its place. Unfortunately, for bitcoin, and not discussed within this documentary, the powers-to-be will never allow bitcoin to succeed as a real alternative to present day banking, as modern day bankers will either force it out of business or co-opt it. There is no in-between.

Based on the title alone, one knows that this is going to be a one-sided documentary, but by distorting the actual facts of Hill v. Thomas this pathetic piece of propaganda exposes itself. Those who truly believe that Anita Hill is courageous for bringing forth her testimony alleging sexual harassment by Mr. Thomas, are missing some very essential points. To wit, it is not possible that an EEOC attorney did not know the civil rights law of 1964 which prohibits employee discrimination, to which sexual harassment is one of those discriminating prohibitions as previously adjudicated per case law. Additionally, the alleged sexual harassment occurred somewhere in the period of 1981-1983, and has a specific statute of limitations which is typically two years, which undoubtedly Ms. Hill was aware of. It would have been truthful and courageous if Ms. Hill had made her allegations during that time, but she deliberately chose not to. Furthermore, Ms. Hill offers no documentation to support her bogus claims other than her shaky memory of innuendos and double-speak. This is an unacceptable performance from any competent attorney, bringing her accusations against Mr. Thomas simply down to the level of "he said, she said". The documentary trumpets the same tired song and dance heralding the great courage of Ms. Hill over and over again, and selling the story that she is to be honored as a wonderful feminist hero. She shouldn't, because unexamined in this limp documentary is the motivation of Ms. Hill which comes down to these salient facts: Mr. Thomas' nomination, meant that Ms. Hill's fast track to any high court had been derailed, to which she felt both envy and scorned, and when the white power establishment, through proxy, came calling on her, she was only too willing to sign up to demonize the black man and to stereotype the black man as a sex-crazed fiend incapable of civility. Ms. Hill's legacy is clear, she fears and despises the black man, and is a complete sell-out.

I was already familiar with the storyline as I had seen a documentary of it, so the drama for me was minimized, but pretty much it's about a cargo ship that is traveling in waters that are known for piracy and sure enough the Captain's cargo ship is targeted for piracy and there the adventure begins. Of course, we're supposed to root for Captain Phillips but it's hardly a fair fight, since behind the Captain is all the mighty power of the American military. Don't mess with America, I suppose, but hey how about a little love and support for those impoverished but enterprising buccaneers.

A Navy SEAL team assassination mission in Afghanistan goes wrong. Those things are going to happen; it's all part and parcel of these types of tricky operations. While America isn't known as a country that celebrates failure, it does however celebrate courage and valor and that is what the movie is mainly about along with trying to do the right thing under trying circumstances. For what it is, the movie works, war is hell, people die.
