Terrible movie-not a comedy or a tragedy; poor camera work; the 2 actresses were ok-good talent in terrible roles. Poor editing. Often very dull film.

There is really nothing special about this film. The plot is more about confusion than complication. The actors are OK, but again nothing stands out. The director could have chosen a more appealing leading man. The actors just seem to be going through their roles without any one being notable. We can see where the movie is going halfway through with no real surprises. OK for light entertainment but no more than that.

Tolstoy must be "turning over in his grave" if he saw what has been done to his book. The acting is ok although Jude Law really did a fine job, but Knightly has really overplayed her role to the point of laughter at her emoting. But mostly Stoppard has turned a fine literary work into something laughable. The costuming is lovely, and the choreography is much overdone-it looks foppish. Vrovsky is portrayed often as a gay blade. If there is one film to be missed this season, this is it.

A Late Quartet10
Nov 11, 2012
This is a terrific film. It is well-written and directed by one of the screenwriters (Zilberman). The acting is superb, especially by Seymour and Walken. It is a story of relationships, starting with individual needs and desires and strengths and weaknesses, but all held together when they are one in a string quartet. It demonstrates the individuality of four people who are then welded together to produce a great unit producing lovely music. The whole cannot function without the individuals, a microcosm of society in general. The story begins with the deterioration of Walken who is the glue that holds them all together, and then the unit falls further apart only to come together at the end in a great final scene. This film will not receive thenumber of viewers it should, which will be a great loss for those who do not see it, and a great film for those who do.

Flight8

This is probably the best performance of Washington's career. The story of his redemption is trite, but he plays it very well. The flight scenes are exciting. His portrayal of an alcoholic is realistic, and the ending is expected. He will surely be up for a best actor award.

The Master8

I believe this is a fine film.Forget everything except the interplay between "the Master" and his acolyte-Fred, each of whom is unforgetably portrayed. There is an underlying and far from explicit suggestion of homosexuality between the two men, plus the explicit portrayal of master-slave relationship. Fred has a family background of psychosis and alcoholism, while master demonstrates strong evidence of **** movie moves slowly which is its main failing, but disregard allbut the two men, their strengths and weaknesses. A strong Oscar contender for picture and best actor(s).

Martha Marcy May Marlene9

The film is at once disorienting and intriguing, about a girl's personality disintegration from a cult background to a blur with reality, and everything in between. The flashbacks serve to underscore how reality changes perceptibly with the past, with a very surprising, unexpected ending that seems puzzling at first but when put in perspective is a brilliant culmination to this excellent film. The clue to the entire movie is in the title, and requires thinking away from the normal. I recommend this film with only minimal reservation. Superb acting and a chilling plot make for great entertainment for the thinking individual.

The Hedgehog8

This is a fine little movie that probably will not receive the attention it deserves. Paloma (the young girl) is eccentric but very intelligent, and the interplay between her, the Hedgehog (the concierege) and the new resident is very interesting. It really is a story of the humanity of a man who can see beneath the "hegdehog" exterior and bring out the true person which lays beneath. It's too bad this movie will probably not get the attention it deserves, but there is a lovely message here.
