This movie showcased Harriet's faith, courage and perseverance. She is a true American hero, and I'm so so so glad that there's *finally* a movie that's been made about her. Highly recommended.
This is like a greek tragedy. An entertaining greek tragedy. Which is such a weird, but wonderful, thing. It doesn't present Tonya as someone who couldn't escape her circumstances - it does something better. It shows us how Tonya held tight to her love of skating like a lifesaver in the midst of her horrible circumstances. In that way, she triumphed. This movie is also a triumph.
This movie had me laughing hysterically and crying in the theater. And I never cry in the theater! It's just so honest and funny and good about all the strange paths that life can take. Highly highly recommended.
This movie made my teeth hurt it was so good and so sad. I realized I'd been grinding them halfway through with the inevitability of what was happening. One of the saddest, most realistic movies I've ever seen. A stunning performance from Gyllenhaal.
Again, another low-score from metacritic that I just don't get - this movie is brilliant. It feels organic, like you're just along for the ride, but what unfolds is lovely, real and clear. This movie is a winner in my books.
I have no idea why this movie has only a 73 from metacritic. It effectively uses a first-person camera to unravel the story for us. It also shows us how terrifying it can be to be a woman in a way that I haven't seen before in film. It was riveting, terrifying, and the only downside was the hollywood style ending that didn't feel true to the rest of the film.
I have no idea why this film has such low reviews; it isn't a war movie, but a love story set during war time. The leads are amazing, and the direction thoughtful and skillful. One of the only movies I've seen that captures what it feels like to realize that you've moved on in a relationship.
This was an amazing film, with direction that effectively used amazing performances and shots, silence and lighting to show us what the civil rights movement fought so hard for. I can't remember the last time I cried in a movie theater, and this made me do that. It also made me realize the civil rights movement was built from many people, and how their courage, dedication and joy helped to usher in advances for all Americans. Highly recommended.
