The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak1
Jul 11, 2024
Daybreak doesn't innovate jrpgs. It looks the same as all the rest. The tiresome tropes of modern jrpgs are very present with a particular niche' i just don't like. The garish strobelight battles with lightning and lasers shooting out of their asses and swords. The formuleic and cringy character aesthetics can be compared to a box of crayons. An absolute eyesore for original artists. The blue hair, pink hair, purple hair etc. We've seen it a million times.. digital art looks cheap. The positive aspects of Daybreak is that the colors have been 'a little bit' more muted, from similar modern jrpg's and the combat isn't nearly as shocking for the eyes. (Shin megami, Tales, mana, granblue fantasy relink, valkyrie profile etc. The music is also very bland without a single memorable track. If you like one-dimensional characters that talk terrible oneliners with an ensemble you could find on a cosplay event.

Bramble: The Mountain King5
Oct 23, 2023
I'm just not a fan of this trend in indiegaming. The cinematic side scrolling platformers like Planet of lana, Somerville, Inside, Little nightmares etc. Where everything you do is walk right, left and climb. It doesn't matter how awesome the graphics and art direction is, the fundamental problem lies in the simplistic, shallow gameplay of these titles. The easy solution would be deeper gameplay mechanics, better combat and enemies to fight along the way, fun distractions like "fishing" or interact with more objects.
And it's perplexing.. why the hell not? It would make bramble the greatest cult indie darling ever. Instead it's just another "gorgeous art direction over gameplay" type of game" without much replay value.
This is generally fine by me, but it's not fine when every single game aping little nightmares with slight variations.

Moonscars9
Oct 29, 2023
This is a masterclass metroidvania. A hidden gem. It got some bad rep for being difficult. This is not true. when the gameplay mechanics sticks its highly addictive just like the best soulslikes. Grime is way way harder with infuriating platforming and **** bossfights. Moonscars doesn't have this problem at all. I loved the pale story of gray irma and the sculptor, the miserable gothic mystisicm and npc sidequests are just as brilliant. Moonscars has a great understanding of what makes metroidvanias fun. It also ramps up towards end with the blackest cathedral level in pixelform to explore.
The Game just reeks cool as hell and i had a blast playing it. I personally think moonscars is a more focused experience then Blasphemous2, Grime, Hollow knight and Death's gambit.
The only negative: more varied and scary enemy designs. The soundtrack is also meh. Perhaps a deeper color palette in curated places would have made the levels more memorable.
The biggest Enigma to me is.. And ive talked about this subject countless of times. What made SOTN such an immortal classic is the affection to details to build immersion. Devil sure is in the details.
Like sitting down on a peace of furniture, changing colors on the cloak, looking out a telescope, soaking in the gothic chill. All these customizable things to make you feel attachment for the protagonist.
Not a single metroidvania has done this seriously. Not a single one! It's honestly godamnn infuriating.. that 20 years later nobody think of this. I can't sit down on a freakn chair in the majority of games.
No rest for the wicked..

Spiritfarer9
Oct 15, 2023
Not many games captures that dreamlike state, after watching a very moody and touching movie. I'm an Artist myself and Spiritfarer Is made by true Artists. It's gorgeous to look at and amazing to listen to. So embark on this beatiful journey through the great beyond. I can't wait to see what Thunder Lotus will create next.
The only objection i have is that Spiritfarer Is perhaps too lenghty. Some daily shores feels repetive like checking up on the spirits. The fishing aspect could been alot more fun with additional mechanics.
They should also Re-release the complete experience on physical. Not the Iam8bit 200$ crap without the any of the added content. I would say Spiritfarer is Essential.

+Stylish 3d throwback with a great concept that i wished where expanded upon with much more details, npcs and character customization.
+Ripping soundtrack
+Best videogame title since Castlevania
-Graphics are too blocky and low-frame for my liking. Makes the levels feel empty. Some cool furnitures had helped.
-Not enough enemies or content.
I'm hoping for a fully fledged sequel.
There's just something about this Indie

Hollow Knight0
Oct 9, 2023
The most overrated Metroidvania in existence. If you take the most dreary parts from Metroid, Axiom2, Ghost song, Hue and limbo you have hollow night. Here's the red level, here's the green level yellow etc. That's how it feels to play this game. Every enviroment rubs me the wrong way.. Then you backtrack through these levels ad infinitum.
I'm not a fan of the papermario artstyle either. Music, text and production quality really are notch but it can't save it from being an absolute boring insomnia to actually play.

Lunark4
Oct 9, 2023
+A neat throwback scifi platformer with a vibrant color palette
+Soundtrack has some nice melodies
+The motion captures are cool
-Clunky controls makes the platforming puzzles mostly annoying to traverse
-The blocky graphics did strain my eyes.
-The storybeat lost me towards the end. Kinda flat world to interact with. No Side content or fun custom mechanics makes
Lunark a one time experience

Amnesia: The Bunker8
Oct 9, 2023
The Bunker is a near perfect little horror experience. The only things dragging the experience down (mostly nitpicks) is that, after awhile the monster ghoul becomes less effective. If frictional games made the monster mutate to a much more hideous nightmarish form throughout, it would be killer. Keeping the generator lit was also annoying.

Aliens: Dark Descent5
Oct 9, 2023
Dark descent Is remincent of those older experimental games.
It's a real-time tactics lite, corridor crawler with terrible management mechanics.
Something that wouldn't be completely out of place on a PS2 era game.
+Somehow it still works. Its a fun, addictive grind even though most elements are completely broken.
-graphics are very dated and ugly between missions. The marines looks like anorectics that never done push ups ever. Also Very poor customization options for the marines. The human enemy design **** to, story is borderline ridiculous and game was so broken on launch with countless patches you could just throw away the physical disc and dowload it. No game preservation here. To make it abundantly clear. No physical copy should come in this state. It's not fun for collectors or any consumer. Ultimately..Dark Descent is just another game that could have been something special. But failed to do so.

Starfield0
Oct 9, 2023
Starfield is what Guardians of the galaxy 3 was. A bloated, incoherent and uninteresting mess.
The reason all these space exploring titles fail to captivate me (outerworlds, NMS) is because they all forget the most Crucial, pivotal things.
Exploring deep space and far away galaxies should be horrifying! Claustrophobic and truly nightmarish with a touch of Hard SciFi.

Lies of P6
Oct 9, 2023
+Amazing soundtrack +Cool protagonist and some enemy design +Familiar addictive gameplay grind. Going through the motions of a formal Soulsborne.
-A poor man's bloodborne -subpar weapons and often stilted combat mechanics. I used the same boring boss blade throughout.
-It's no fashion Souls. No hats, boring masks that wouldn't fit to any costume at all. -Levels could often feel lifeless and muddled with lots of reused assets. One more tree looking scaffolding i would go nuts.
-Story didn't grab me. Lot's of mindless npc talking **** for hours. Couldn't care less towards endgame.
Whatever the devs next game will be, I hope it's not the sequel. The ending totally ****. Verdict: Lies of P is not better then Lords of the fallen.
