CS:GO. I feel very mixed about this game, since unlike in source, you can't ignore the microphone in this game, as it is very essential to winning, yet the abuse over voice chat is actually the worst out of all of the games I have ever played. The other side of this issue is that the people without a microphone who play competitive games completely screw the team over from the start due to the lack of communication. Smurfs and cheaters roam the game rampantly screwing over the people who wish to play legit. As I speak, Overwatch is now out of Beta, so I hope we see some improvement. Valve also placed a new rule that you have to be CS:GO profile "Private Rank 3" to play competitive mode to reduce smurfing and cheating, but it hurts the players who are legit as well, since there is no way to gain enough EXP fast enough to play competitive mode unless you play around 100 dms and win every one. Kids who don't know how to be polite to people also bolster a percent of the fun I could have if the community was nicer to each other. On the other hand, I enjoy playing this game because of the high skill ceiling and some of the nice people you meet during the game. I have met people from about everywhere, from Europe to Asia. I enjoy talking to them and learning about their life opposed to my very stereotypical life in the States. I enjoy learning to play better, and eventually rank up, which gives me quite a bit of satisfaction when it does happen, my everlasting hope to be one of the best. So, if you just overlook the cheaters and salty people, you will be set to have a fun gaming experience.
Previously playing CS:GO, I decided to buy the predecessor to see the origins of the game and how it flourished to the caliber it is today. I was greeted with servers that are less likely to share lag spikes with everyone on the server itself, but to individual players with high pings. A ghost town already, there was abusive chat and such that you see in any game open to everyone. The way to cure that is to just ignore chat and turn off voice chat. As the game is a ghost town by the time I write this, it is still quite enjoyable to play on a 24/7 deathmatch server and just muck around with the different guns. Back to it being a ghost town again. Just like CS:GO, the community is wild, unregulated and very salty due to the lack of common people with administrative power (other than server owners).
Ah Minecraft. I loved this game early on for its capabilities for active multiplayer and the number of active servers that were available, engaging in many adventures with my friends. Now however, I don't even have the game downloaded due to the sheer lack of new stuff to do. Sure, mods solve this, but I really don't want to risk my computer's security to download stuff that would take the developers a few minutes to add. It is already out there, now just work with the developers of these mods and release an update with all sorts of bonus stuff. I would redownload the game if this were to happen. Secondly, this game also got boring, as the Single Player survival was extremely tedious after a while, the only fun coming in playing with TNT and Redstone. Also may I mention that this game is $27? You could almost get a used XBOX 360 with this money, but instead I spent my $27 dollars on a game I would end up deleting. This game held a lot of sentimental value to me, so I have very mixed feelings about it.
Nidhogg is excellent for anybody who wants a cool, innovative, and challenging side-scrolling strategy game. There is a solid single-player campaign that is relatively challenging, and the multi-player is fun as well. As you progress, your character doesn't get more skilled, you as the player does, which is really what sparked me to play this game. For the people out there that do not like this game because it only really has a multi-player- This game is really inexpensive. You can't expect too much from it. I bought it from the steam sale this summer, and it turned out to be worth the $1.49 that it was. I obviously wouldn't have bought it if it was above $5. If you can snag it for less than $2, it is totally worth it.
Previously pretty hardcore playing Counter Strike: Source as well as Counter Strike: Global Offensive, CoD 4 was pretty solid. I didn't expect much out of it originally, but it has turned out to be very good and somewhat less smurf and cheater filled than the Counter Strike community as a whole. I noticed as there is no voice chat, all the "Yo Momma" jokes go away magically, making you a god immune to annoying kids who aren't mature enough to play Call of Duty. Bravo, Infinity Ward. I feel like this will somewhat replace CS in my daily game playing agenda.
