Spyro 1-3 are bonafide classics for the PS1, but this remaster is horribly oversaturated. As for the positives, they do a great job making the 3 games feel uniform and seamless. They feel like 3 chapters of the same interconnected story, which was a pleasant surprise. The controls are smooth and user interface presentation is nice. Adding Skill Points to Spyro 1 was also awesome, and I love how they're separate challenges and not tied to any trophies, as it gives more life to the game after earning the Platinum. As for the negatives, they cranked the saturation color palette way too high, and it is consistent throughout all 3 games. Somebody needs to tell Toys for Bob that brighter doesn't mean better... The oversaturation is just too much. Similar issues have been patched or corrected in the past in games like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Definitive Edition. It would be a welcome improvement. As for the games themselves, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage was my favorite growing up, but playing through them again, I think 1 and 3 may outshine it. Freeing the dragons in 1 and hatching the dragon eggs in 3 is more fun than collecting the portal orbs in 2. I liked how they brought back the Egg Thieves in Spyro 3 after seldomly appearing in Spyro 2. And the Sparx mini-games in 3 are really fun. Variety in general is a theme in the Spyro games. Each level features a completely different type of enemy and world theme. Nowadays, people consider "collectibles" to be poor form in gaming. However the Spyro trilogy is a prime example of why collectibles can be fun and satisfying, especially since you have Sparx to point you in the right direction if you are missing any gems. The games are much easier than I remember. They're short, family-friendly, and quite accessible difficulty-wise, so would be fun for almost anyone. I would consider them must-play games for any fans of platformers.
