Lanterns2
Aug 31, 2026
As someone who grew up reading classic comic books in the 1960s and '70s—stories that provided a genuine sanctuary and taught timeless values during a difficult childhood—it is genuinely heartbreaking to watch what modern television has done to beloved characters. Instead of honoring the rich mythology and straightforward, inspiring heroism that made properties like Green Lantern timeless, Lanterns completely alienates longtime fans. Episode 3 is a prime example of everything wrong with contemporary adaptations: it discards classic lore in favor of heavy-handed, divisive social commentary and preachy messaging. Rather than delivering the cosmic spectacle and compelling sci-fi adventure fans actually want, the series chooses to rewrite foundational origins into a vehicle for modern political axes. If you cherish the integrity of the original comic runs and respect the classic mythos, save your time and skip this. It's an exhausting departure from what made these heroes great in the first place.

Devs5

I started Devs last night and stopped cold in episode 3. A helicopter lands. Forest, the eccentric tech founder, walks out to meet it. A senator steps off. He is polite, almost deferential. She already knows the map: his company didn’t just win the quantum race, it wiped out the field. She has hearings. He manages her. The scene works as plot. It also follows a rule that runs through a lot of prestige TV in recent years: when a minority woman is put in institutional power, she arrives composed, briefed, and intellectually airtight. Doubt, vanity, and moral gray stay with the white male lead. His flaws are character. Her having any would be an insult. I am 65. I remember when minority roles were written as servants or afterthoughts. I also remember the long institutional "corrections" that followed. This is the later habit: repair turned into a convention. The people who made those choices usually call the motive benevolent. But that does not stop the scene from reading like a statement. You are no longer only watching two people negotiate a secret. You are watching an industry tell you what authority is supposed to look like. Devs did not invent it. It is one clean example. Once you see the pattern, the helicopter landing is hard to watch as just a scene.

House of the Dragon3

Struck out at Season 3, Episode 4—I’m officially done. I really tried to give this show every benefit of the doubt, but Season 3, Episode 4 was the absolute breaking point for me. I’m finally putting my foot down and walking away. Unlike the original Game of Thrones, where distinct characters and clear storylines instantly hooked you and built incredible week-to-week anticipation, House of the Dragon suffers from a severe lack of distinction. The characters blur together, making it an uphill battle just to follow who is who and care about where their stories are going. Furthermore, the visual layout of the factions adds significantly to the confusion. With a larger mix of prominent dark-skinned characters split and shuffled across opposing sides—combined with similar costuming and styling—it becomes genuinely difficult to visually track who belongs to which house or faction from scene to scene. What should be an engaging epic feels like a confusing, tedious chore to sit through. Life is too short to force yourself through a series that stops respecting your time. Count me out for the rest of the ride.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)7

7.5. True to the originals, meaning no injected DEI or ESG virtue signaling nonsense. Which is probably why the "pros" are raging about it.
Some predictable cheesy parts but Avatar was orginally marketed towards kids and teens.

Our earth is being invaded! But let's put that possible end of the world on hold for a Japanese woman girl on girl sex scene.

Secret Invasion1

Yet another re-write of the Marvel Comics Universe cannon. Originally the Skrulls were shape changing invaders disguised on Earth and were at war with the Kree. But not here. In this they are innocent space wanderers looking for a new home. While Nick Fury discusses being a poor man riding the bus. I Thought, maybe, an MCU series could be interesting. Without revisions or virtue signaling. Wrong again. What was I thinking? Fool me once....

The Legend of Vox Machina0

Turned it off after the first 10 minutes. Why does our entertainment industry feel so compelled to send messages like these? Otherwise, it seemed a great storyline. What a shame.

The Last of Us: 1 Long, Long Time0
Feb 3, 2023
Why, why, why does the entertainment industry do this? This series is based on a game. Leave it that way without your showcased preference messaging.

The Last of Us: Season 12
Feb 3, 2023
Why does the entertainment industry feel the need to inject virtue signaling into otherwise excellent storylines? I suppose because they know they have a captive audience to indoctrinate.

This is not the books I read. Nor anything like the Peter Jackson movies. Why did the Tolkien Estate OK this?
