The Stanley Parable10
Nov 6, 2021
A game that breaks the fourth wall and makes you think about gaming itself. Is all freedom of choice in games merely an illusion, while in fact the developer is always railroading you to where he wants you to go? Can you disobey and break out of those confines? Can you break the game? What about real life? Are you only pushing buttons in the way you are ordered to, just like Stanley does in his office? Is Stanley a parable for us?

When you finish this you just wish you could use a time travelling pocket watch in real life, just to go back and do it all again.

Beautiful, hand drawn work of art. The gameplay is basic and a bit clunky, but it is of secondary importance anyway. The dreamlike, nightmarish atmosphere, achieved with music, sound design, animation and the beautifully strange Romansh language is the reason you play this. It's not a horror game in the usual sense of the word. No jump scares or any real horror survival mechanics. Just the constant unsettling feeling of being a part of the dark and creepy side of Swiss folklore. What more can you ask for?

Great writing! Deep themes (religion, justice, freedom, responsibility etc.) are done in a mature way, and the writing is concise and not a drag to read. The game slowly guides you into an entire world in which you must find your place, and then puts you in the middle of a pivotal moment of its destiny. You feel connected to the characters, and care about their fate. Your decisions feel meaningful and important, even though your character is not omnipotent, as is common in video games. Be prepared to make some tough choices that may bring unforeseen and unwanted consequences. Really nice illustrations and fitting music. Deep lore, but not overwhelmingly complicated. Solid replayability. So glad I stumbled upon this! 10/10
