You'd think this would lead to all manner of generic story beats. But LaBute and his writers (as well as stalwart TV director Michael Nankin, who does some truly terrific, atmospheric work in these first three installments) manage to give the material a distinctive tweak or two.

The characters take forever to make narrative connections that seem immediately obvious and no one seems remotely curious about what exactly is happening to the world. Yet even as her hours-long insistence that she is nothing “special” grows tedious, Vanessa is delightfully cranky.

The story has good and bad moments. It doesn't seem to follow an overall arc. Every season just drives it further but with new ideas. This unfortunately causes inconsistencies and confusion. There are some very frustrating moments in this show that seem to be just plot armor to have a new conflict to tell because they ran out of previous subplots. The acting of Kelly Overton is something I can't make up my mind about. It's odd and unexpected the least, but it kind of suits the character regardless. There were some moments where I considered stopping to watch. Overall, it still keeps me thrilled enough to continue. The core ideas about the universe aren't very clichè, fortunately. I'd put it into an indie vampire/zombie genre. Overall storytelling methods, however, are very clichè and annoyingly predictable.

It gets off to a slow start, but Van Helsing picks up in the second episode. It is also super violent and super gory. If you like that sort of thing, you might want to give this a chance.

Van Helsing obviously wants to be “The Walking Dead” with vampires, but it lacks that show’s production values, cast and over-the-top imagination.

It is excessively gory and often grotesque (the foley artists must have had a ball with this one), but that can’t make up for the fact that it’s just not particularly unique or compelling.

Tried very hard to get into the show but just couldnt. Very boring characters, premise and setting. Cliche storylines that are very predictable.

This show seems to be suffering from an identity crisis... couldn't decide if it wanted to become a vampire-inspired tv show or zombies. I didn't appreciate this show shoving this feminine LGBT agenda onto me, and the misandry going on is just too real... I can just imagine the backlash this show would've received if it was in reverse! If the Brotherhood sexually mutilated women vampires in order for them to join their cult. The characters have no interesting background... The story is mediocre and Cliche. Very predictable!
