Thanks to winning performances by Cameron, Chenoweth and others, it's a flick the family can sit down and enjoy.

It's no High School Musical, but the songs are catchy, and the junior villains are worth rooting for. [31 Jul 2015, p.55]

"We must decide for ourselves who we are." Maleficent's performance is simply fantastic, but none of the musical numbers are particularly catchy.241221 (1.5)"We must decide for ourselves who we are." This core message is perhaps the most meaningful takeaway from a film that otherwise requires a high tolerance for "cringe"—I can't help but wonder if I would have enjoyed this more if I had seen it ten years ago. The story begins with King Beast and Queen Belle, who established the United States of Auradon and banished all villains to the Isle of the Lost, a place stripped of magic and even Wi-Fi. Their son, Prince Ben, now sixteen and about to be crowned king, decides to give the children of these villains a chance at redemption.Among the chosen descendants are Mal, the daughter of Maleficent; Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen, who is incredibly smart but acts ditzy to please her mother’s obsession with finding a prince; Carlos, Cruella de Vil’s son, who has been gaslit into fearing dogs; and Jay, Jafar’s son, who was raised to be a thief. While Jafar was a politician in the original lore, here he's portrayed as a common thief, passing those traits down to Jay. The casting for Belle, Snow White, and the Evil Queen is somewhat disappointing given they are meant to be the most beautiful in their respective worlds, but Kristin Chenoweth—the original Glinda!—is absolutely spectacular as **** VKs arrive at Auradon Prep with secret missions: Mal is tasked by her mother to steal the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand, while Evie is pressured to find a castle for her mother. They encounter the student body, including Audrey (daughter of Aurora), Doug (son of Dopey), and Chad Charming (son of Cinderella). Chad is particularly loathsome—he inherited his father’s looks but none of his brains, jealous of Jay’s athleticism and using Evie’s crush to turn her into his "homework shuttle." The school museum even treats villain artifacts like the spinning wheel and the rose as morbid trophies, which feels odd considering the history is only twenty years **** plot hinges on Mal using a love potion cookie to woo Ben so she can sit near the wand during the coronation. However, she realizes Ben’s feelings were genuine and starts to experience love for the first time. I recognized the actress playing Mal as Ruby from *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.*! The film ultimately teaches that goodness and love are stronger than evil. This is literalized when Maleficent shrinks into a tiny lizard, representing the small amount of love she truly holds. While the lesson is sweet, the execution feels a bit like a relic of a past Disney era.

Granted, one might wish the focus tilted a bit more heavily toward the adults--Kristin Chenoweth as Maleficent steals every scene she’s in--or that the second half wasn’t as heavily padded. Still, the songs are clever, the look is sumptuous, and the idea is so good it goes down easy even if the broth’s a trifle undercooked.

The rather flimsy story is strung together by musical numbers--some stronger than others.

The dull Descendants.... just seems like a widget--albeit an occasionally cute, harmless widget--churned out by the Disney machine.

The storyline is bad, the music is even worse. I would recommend this to any child who likes Disney, but otherwise is a waste of time.

Descendants is satanic and full of witchcraft. This movie has caused evil things to people before it's aired on Disney Channel. It needs to be cancelled.

What is perhaps the high school musical of this generation which is unfortunate. The low production quality is difficult to ignore or excuse. The musical numbers fall short with nothing really resonating as a staying classic. The cast is passable at best with a script as watertight as a sieve.
