In a sense, Black Summer is The Walking Dead without all the bloated melodrama, kooky villains, and pretentious blabbering.

Nothing is less terrifying than over-familiarity, and that’s only one of the many problems with Netflix’s Black Summer (premiering on April 11), a bleak, dull affair that mistakes camera movement for narrative energy and has about as much life as the walking dead.

Black Summer isn't just another zombie series. It's a nightmare in motion. From the very first minutes, with that desperate escape into chaos, it's clear there's no room to breathe, no space for slow-burning tension. This is pure survival - instinct, raw and unfiltered. If The Walking Dead leaned into long-winded drama and endless moral dilemmas, Black Summer goes straight to the point: run, hide, suffer, **** camera throws you into the middle of it - literally. There's barely any music, which only makes the tension worse. There are no explanations, no epic speeches, no characters who feel "safe" for more than two minutes. The threat is constant. And not just from the zombies - who are fast, relentless, and truly terrifying - but from humans, who are often even worse. There are no heroes or villains here, just people trying not to die today.Episodes like the one in the hotel, or that endless single-take chase through the streets, are masterclasses in how to build anxiety with minimal resources. The use of silence, empty spaces, long shots... everything is designed to make you squirm in your seat. And it works. Oh, it really **** doesn't have the grand scale of other shows in the genre - and it doesn't need it. Its rawness, pacing, and ability to generate genuine fear make it a much more intense and harrowing experience than anything else in recent years. Alongside Seinfeld and The Umbrella Academy, it's one of the series that's left the biggest mark on me. Brutal, direct, unforgiving. Just like the apocalypse should be.

I don’t know how this has an average review rate. I have absolutely loved watching this show. I anxiously anticipated The Last of Us since I played the game, and after watching it, I absolutely favour Black Summer. The zombies are terrifying, the acting is brilliant and all round, the series has been fantastic so far.

I really liked The Walking Dead, but I absolutely love Black Summer. It's presented in a vignette structure similar to Tarantino movies, which enables the creators to jump to the next exciting bit rather than spend lots of time on transitions. The story is told primarily through relentless action rather than characters talking about stuff that doesn't matter that much. There is an emphasis on realism rather than Hollywood storytelling; the writers definitely researched human behavior. No one is safe, and a major character can die at any moment. The zombies are refreshingly dangerous and difficult to contend with.

It's ok, but if you seen the walking dead you've seen this. Everything seems overfamiliar now in the oversaturated zombie trope. The zombies turn so quickly and move so fast you can't see how humanity would have lasted more than a week against them.

If this show was released in 2010 it would have probably won a Grammy. But unfortunately, it wasn’t. It’s just another zombie show in a long line of zombie shows. The first few episodes aren't bad but the zombie apocalypse just doesn't cut it anymore. That and it felt a bit cheap.
