Absurd is the best way to describe the Zach Galifianakis-fronted comedy, like absurdly funny, the way “Portlandia” is on IFC.

Comedically, Baskets has basically remained the same, minus some of its more abrasive shades exhibited early on. ... Baskets has always been comfortable playing itself as an unfussy drama, often privileging melancholic portraiture over punchlines. However, this season trades in depression for self-improvement, and the results are more poignant than ever before.

I’ll keep checking it out for its incidental pleasures. A lot of Baskets’s best humor is totally random

Ultimately, Baskets isn’t a cold-hearted laugh at his expense. Chip’s downward spiral is affecting, and by episode three, I was emotionally invested in his journey.

It’s good to know there’s something more to Baskets than a creep in greasepaint. The delicious misery here is evenly spread.

[Louie] Anderson and Martha Kelly--who delivers a supremely deadpan performance as Chip's downtrodden friend--are the best things in Baskets, which is so aggressively downbeat it washes away most of the humor.

Baskets settles for being a dingy theater of humiliation, like the very worst scenes in Todd Solondz's films, without the visual flare or bold, challenging characters.

This is a wonderful piece, it is as funny as it is sad. For me personally, Chip's character is very close, he is absurd, not lucky, but charming in his dedication. I strongly advise you to familiarize yourself with this series, it is cool and good-natured tube.

Baskets starts strong with its first season. The tragic clown angle is renewed with zest as Zach G's impeccable comedic timing never let's any dark moment remain such for long. However, somewhere in the middle of season two the show appears to lose its original footing and begins meandering into the realm of cliche TV drama foibles. Why the writers chose to ditch Chip's story and bring his family to forefront does little more than make his family unlikeable with their contrive backstories.. I feel it actually short-changes Louie Anderson's incredible performance as Mom Baskets. Once it veers into season 3, the series loses its gritty hilariousness and becomes a pandering melodrama with a few Galifianakis one shots here and there to keep it "funny".
