The Warriors

For me personally, It’s one film that can’t be redone for the simple fact, there isn’t a living director that can capture what made this movie work! If you’ve never seen this film, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s definitely in my TOP 5 of “All time greatest movies.”

The Warriors is a deeply silly movie. Its gangs are ridiculous comic-book figures. Still, director Walter Hill treats its world with total seriousness. Bleak synthesizer drones thrum and throb. The streets glow with slickly inky-black greasiness. Nobody smiles. It’s so awesome.

Walter Hill, who directed Charles Bronson's Hard Times, puts the action sequences (that's a euphemism for head-bashing and crotch-gouging) together with panache and this exploitation picture strolls right along. [10 Feb 1979]

Walter Hill's existential action piece, rendered in a complete stylistic abstraction that will mean tough going for literal-minded audiences. Not quite the clean, elegant creation that his earlier films were, The Warriors admits to failures of conception (occasional) and dialogue (frequent), but there is much of value in Hill's visual elaboration of the material.

The Warriors is a comic book morality tale, Westside Story crossed with A Clockwork Orange. The movie is so perversely fascinating in a variety of ways that it’s too bad the imagination demonstrated wasn’t used for something better than what turns out to be one more exploitation film in which the audience is encouraged to cheer the sights and sounds of mayhem.

Director Walter Hill has only the faintest interest in realism. His New York City is merely the backdrop for a bone-crunching fantasy that has more to do with science fiction and musicals than social commentary. When it's good - which is not often enough - it suggests what The Wiz, under happier circumstances, might have been. [26 Feb 1979, p.81]

If the movie is not as dangerous as its detractors claim, neither is it as glorious and memorable as some of its less discriminating admirers would have it. I find the spectacle fading from my memory in a jumble of dislocated colors and motions. In retrospect, it seems too studiously unreal.

O filme da minha infância, sempre vou guardar no meu coração. Tudo nesse filme é ótimo, principalmente o começo, que introduz todas as gangues. Estão perdendo a oportunidade de criar um filme na mesma pegada que esse.

"Warriors come out to play-y....Warriors come out to play-y" Classic, and atypical action movies; with some good dialogues, drama and Social commentary . It's a little different from the book but it is enjoyable. If there was an "action movie university" this movie will be on one of the textbook

Gang warfare in the boroughs of NYC, seen at their absolute grimiest. This is a film that's admirable for its inner fire, and its determination, if not for its execution or storytelling. In a sense,The Warriors almost works as a sheer abstract; lingering shots of graffiti-laden subway cars and dark, wet city streets abound, lending it value as something of a time capsule in the modern light. The plot is adorably simple, though, and overacted at every turn. It's no surprise to discover that this is the first or second film on nearly every cast member's resume, although I'm not sure a more accomplished thespian could do much with this script, which left me laughing at its sheer absurdity more than once. It's more of a visual film anyway, reliant upon the cityscapes and quaintly-themed gang ensembles to do most of the heavy-lifting. That's a wise decision, as it's exciting to look at, though the aforementioned gangs vary from laughable (an entire syndicate of mimes) to, actually, pretty cool (lots of stylish fedoras in this flick). Unfortunately, there's a serious lack of violence for this kind of picture (flight seems to be the word of the day) and the second act drags on for so long, there's barely any time for an adequate resolution at the end. A valiant effort, not to mention an influential one, but not a particularly good film of its own right.

A large bunch of poorly-parented misfits are gathered around a false prophet. False prophet gets shot dead in the head (whoa, who would have thought that could happen in a gathering of thugs, thieves and the like?) and the whole bunch goes running behind a group of them. All of this while a radio hostess makes a show of it instead of calling the Police. Bad life examples + no redemption + no good life lessons to be learned = waste of time.

Un navet épouvantable à fuir à toute blinde, car après tout ce temps, il sent encore et de plus en plus fort... Dire que ce truc a été boulotté par Walter Hill, on a peine à y croire ! mais j'imagine que tout le monde peut se tromper. Et marcher dedans sans faire exprès. Au contraire du cochon, rien n'est bon dans ce torchon et on a beau y regarder, on en sortirait même pas de quoi faire un téléfilm du dimanche après-midi. Le scénario est inexistant, les acteurs sont à la rue (c'est le cas de le dire) et même le côté kitsch de ces bandes de crevards ne parvient pas à faire sourire. Et pourtant qu'ils sont ridicules et ringards, difficile de faire pire ! des "guerriers" de mes deux, ouais ! Le film n'avance pas et se fait de plus en plus naze, de plus en plus bête et ennuyeux. Une coquille vide qui sent le poisson, rien d'autre.
