The A.V. Club
With its blaring hardcore punk soundtrack and aggressive neon color palette, The Ranger isn’t remotely subtle. Given the type of movie it is, that’s mostly a good thing, though the in-your-face style gives away some of the aforementioned character-driven twists earlier than it should.

The Film Stage
This film is about ownership of one’s actions. It’s about accepting that which you cannot run from. No matter how dark that reality appears, however, The Ranger is also very funny.

The Ranger is a few degrees off of being great; its villain is way too confused and ill-plotted for the film to be anything other than periodically fun.

Ultimately The Ranger promises more than it delivers.

Diehard gorehounds may be disappointed by its relatively infrequent reliance on graphic and grisly mayhem (relative to this particular subgenre’s standards, that is), but Wexler’s discretion in this area turns out to be one of her film’s few distinguishing characteristics.

By the time the killings start, the film already feels draining, with no characters worth caring about, much less watching.

The first half of this movie is pretty dire and I suspect most people don't make it beyond that and i dont judge the negative scores as a result. However, the second half is actually really rather good, the villain is fantastic, there's a nice twist and the setting works very well. It's such a shame it takes so long to get going and I don't blame anyone who gives up before then but all I can say is... Stick with it!
