Hosoda brings emotional depth to what could easily have become a formulaic martial arts saga. Instead, Boy and Beast is a bracing tale of two flawed individuals who find the love and discipline they need to assume their rightful places in their respective worlds.

Though it piles all sorts of emotional baggage onto a series of already-tired believe-in-yourself cliches, Hosoda’s over-complicated script has the virtue of expressing itself less via words than it does through truly spectacular set pieces.

The disparity between worlds lends itself to the feeling of awe and wonder that humourously contradicts the perspective of our protagonist. Beautifully animated and designed, it is far more than a homage to Disney's beast.

The cliche fantasy aspects are justified through Hosada's direction of human spiritualism throughout the picture. The lessons learned and the dynamic character relationships are strengthened by flowing, beautiful, action-packed animation. It's some of the best animation to grace his work- the team should be commended. The boy is a brilliantly refreshing coming-of-age character.

Anime enthusiasts will enjoy The Boy and the Beast, but so will anyone who appreciates a good fantasy yarn.

The Boy and the Beast might not quite have the storytelling sophistication to win over every adult, but for teens and tweens in the midst of their own coming-of-age stories, it has the potential to be a wondrous eye-opener.

For answers, prepare to sit through two hours of complications, though you will probably figure it out before the spectacular ending.

A huge success in Japan, this thrilling, if overlong, epic from director Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, Summer Wars) is part "Karate Kid" and part Japanese folklore.

There are elements of The Boy And The Beast that undoubtedly reinforce the promise that Hosoda holds: it’s a treat to look at, is inventive in spots, and will probably be eaten up by younger viewers. But it ultimately proves both narratively unsatisfying and emotionally lacking.

The boy and the beast...this film is so heartwarming, funny, & deep and at the same time refreshing. A lot of people will feel themselves related with the main character, because this film touches themes like emptiness, insecureness, things that happen now in the modern world. This film will get audience to reflect on their past, and after watching it, you will value more what you really have in terms of family, friends, and yourself.

The movie had great animation and characters but some were just too stupid to me , i know it's a movie but sometimes characters need to do stuff that make sense. And halfway through the movie it begins to slow down a bit boring me.

The beginning was intriguing, but step-by-step it goes banal, then boring. Too many characters, too little logic and credible deeds. The design looks really good.

The movie is really well animated and it's voice acting is just as well executed. Character design (only on a few characters) is fairly good as well. But it doesn't try to be more than the tropes it plays with, so it never accomplishes anything; The story is heavily lacking, the characters and their arcs are predictable and rushed, making it hard to connect with them. There's an abundance of logic leaps so it's hard to take the movie seriously as it progresses, with each scene trying to be moving and impactful. Although there may be a few (very) limited, short-lived moments where the movie succeeds emotionally, these scenes feel more accidental. If not that, they're dramatically heavy-handed. Some ideas that would give it more merit are touched at but for the most part left alone, so it remains aloof with it's own cliches. Overall, It's hard to watch something that feels like it's congratulating itself even with how poorly executed it is. It's a good watch if you take it ironically, though, as blunt as that may be. Otherwise you'd either sit there seething or laughing at it. (Or both...)
