This movie will fill your heart up. Casarosa is an artist with a true perspective, fearless in his creative impulses and limitless in his compassion, and Luca is a pure expression of these sensibilities.

The story's bright swirl of Pixar pixie dust, jangle soundtrack, and gentle lessons on accepting otherness and learning to move past fear feel like a temporary passport: a sweetly soulful all-ages dip in la dolce vita.

Luca is undeniably slight. But there’s also relief in its modesty: rather than shoehorning spectacle and stakes into this story, Casarosa gives the film and its easygoing humour room to breathe.

Granted, Luca might not go down as one of the more profound entries in the Pixar catalog. Don’t expect it to make you well up the same way Up or Toy Story 2 did. Still, at a time in which international travel is mostly for the bold, it’s an undeniably pleasant summertime trip.

Pixar’s most intimate and laidback effort since Ratatouille feels like a throwback to one of Mark Twain’s rollicking picaresque sagas.

A strange hybrid of Italian neorealism and fish-based fantasy, Luca is beautiful to behold but plays it too safe to make a real impact. Still, great CG linguine.

It’s a lot, but also very little: The action amounts to multiple variations on “try not to get wet, or caught out” to push along a plot that dispenses the usual life lessons about being brave and valuing friendship.

Luca was a very cute, sweet, and funny movie with a very cool nostalgic feeling. The animation was exceptional; very visually beautiful and stunning, the water especially was just gorgeous and so well done. The writing was superb, loved the sweetness and simplicity of just a solid story about friendship and the themes of friendship, loving yourself, and not judging people based on their appearance were very well done. Jack Dylan Grazer and Jacob Tremblay's performances and chemistry were outstanding. Also the music was lovely. One of my favorite animated movies I've ever seen.

This movie has excellent animation and good voice acting, however, this kind of plot has been done so many times before, and better I might add. Still, the movie itself does provide enough entertainment to keep the interest of the audience for the 98 minute runtime.

Looks cute initially, but very boring and predictable story. Picks up towards the end a little, but not by much. It's a mix between Findong Nemo and Cars, set in Italy.

I thought Reya was showing the lack of inspiring writing coming out of Pixar these days but this is a new low. Rip off Little Mermaid, remove 95% of what made that a classic, add every coming of age story cliche, add 1 dimensional characters, wrap it in Nickelodeon level animation, add the worst written zero dimension cartoon bad guy in history, poke it full of massive plot holes to save money, and you're left with entertainment depth somewhere between a Scooby Doo episode and a mattress advertisement. Usually you can count on Pixar to at least deliver on the animation and art but this looks like Disney gave them no budget. The pathetic attempts at any comic relief weren't even smile inducing, just stupid and forced. 15 years ago this would be straight to DVD instead of straight to streaming. How anyone could seriously rate this above a 5/10 is beyond me. There's zero redeeming value beyond it's slightly more entertaining than an after school special. Not worth watching even for free. Go rewatch The Little Mermaid from before Disney ****.
