American drama Jockey is superb, the perfect confluence of a great story expertly directed, with outstanding performances, stunning cinematography, and a dazzling score.

Any workplace drama (and that’s what it is, more than a sports film) must fit you for the shoes of the laborer, and that’s exactly what Jockey does. It makes you understand why riders would subject themselves to so much pain and poverty in search of what one calls “that one minute where you feel like the most important thing in the world.”

For those of us who’ve been enthralled by what Collins has done on the periphery, the chance to see him occupy center stage — and in something so suited to his skill set — is enough to make this worthwhile. But the way in which he keeps both the rest of the cast and the story itself in the pocket without making it feel like a showreel, even down to his final here’s-the-big-payoff sequence, is what makes this special.

The framework, as predictable as it is, works because of the sincerity behind the endeavor and the depth of Collins’ performance. He is the heart and soul of Jockey, and no one who gives it a chance will be forgetting his name anytime soon.

'The Wrestler' meets 'The Rider.' No, but seriously, 'Jockey' is a well-made film, but it turns out the same as 'To Leslie': an excellent central performance and that's pretty much it. The last sequence is great, though. If you're wondering, the song playing is called "Felicity" by Hologramme.

One of the worst sins a film can commit is to provide its viewers with a seemingly engaging premise and then completely drop the ball. Such is the case with writer-director Clint Bentley’s debut feature about an aging jockey with a potentially intriguing back story, relationships and character attributes whose seeds are planted but never sprout. That shortcoming is compounded by the film’s failure to sufficiently exploit the visual appeal of its subject matter – horse racing – which should innately lend itself to a wealth of exciting sports footage. What’s more, the supposedly stirring breakthrough performance of longtime character actor Clifton Collins Jr. is a major letdown in which he comes across virtually the same as he has in many of his prior portrayals. This combination thus regrettably results in an array of long-winded, boring, talky exchanges that are about as tasty as a bowl of cold porridge. Regrettably, this is yet another in a long string of overhyped 2021 releases that just doesn’t rise to the level of its promise. Put this one down and out of its misery.
