Coyote vs. Acme

The best part of all is that “Coyote vs. Acme” is a superb piece of filmmaking, a loving tribute to the most hapless of all Looney Tunes characters and the many fans who love him.

Green’s film dramatizes all the awful things that were about to happen to itself, and the fact that it’s finally out — and that it was brilliant all along — is an ironically cheerful conclusion to a film about constant struggle.

It is the way the movie reckons with corporate malfeasance with humor and surprisingly heartfelt emotion that matters.

A daft, inventive, hilarious comedy that’s more than worth the wait. In Coyote Vs. Acme, it’s the audience that wins big.

This merry, long-delayed mix of cartoon and live action breaks out of legal jail to delight us all, except the Hollywood studio that tried to kill it. Go Coyote!

Coyote vs. Acme may not be a great movie, but, as a story that pits a scrappy underdog against the forces of soulless corporate malevolence, it does come equipped with a pretty great metaphor for its own Hollywood misfortunes.

This is a film only personal injury attorneys could love.

Why they wanted to shelve this film is a complete mystery. Very close to what might be called ‘Absolute Cinema’, it stays true to the slapstick humour that made these animated characters famous, whilst making a clever critique of big business. Anyone who grew up watching these animated shorts will feel thoroughly rewarded.

It has a lot of heart. But overall, the movie didn't grip me. Visual gags aside, nothing really hooked me. My compatriates enjoyed it however. So it must have some appeal. Just not for me.

Surprisingly decent family comedy action movie. Like other movies before like who framed roger rabbit, the VFX heavy production use combination of live action and CGI cel shaded into a classic Warner Bros style to tell its story. Will forte delivers a fantastic performance as the lead human actor here, as most of the CG characters carry the weight of the story around him. If you're in the right mood, a fan of the original wb cartoon shorts or even just looking for something to watch with the kids then this will likely fit the bill. As a bit of a cartoon enthusiast I was disappointed by the use of CGi over traditional hand drawn animation, but I can understand given how incredibly time consuming that would've been with the number of VFX shots here. Music score was great and the plot was ok enough to carry you through to end. For me the marks went down for CGI style instead of hand drawn, a very loose unsurprising plot and just a very over saturated genre. See monkeybone and who framed roger rabbit for more inspired examples of how this particular genre can work at its best.

This film starts with a sequence of classic chases with Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, while every product the coyote uses backfires. This sets up the concept: He hires a personal injury attorney (Will Forte) to sue ACME, the company who makes them. This also introduces the full lineup of Looney Tunes characters in supporting roles, adding most of the fun. Forte is working hard, but is seldom funny, while the often-amusing John Cena, as the opposing lawyer, doesn’t get the opportunity for laffs. There are a few clever moments and lots of cartoon gags, many of which are amusing. Despite all the obstacles, animated and otherwise, this film has a cheerful, upbeat vibe that’s made even more enjoyable thanks to the toons. NOTE: After the credits there’s a Thank You to the public, who lobbied to have this film released after it was slated not to come out and have the studio take a loss instead.
