Christmas Crossfire

A Bleak and Bizarre Black Comedy Capturing the Grudges and Claustrophobia of a Decaying Rural Town.(First Watch) 210506 / (Rewatch) 241229 (1.5)German cinema felt unfamiliar to me, making it somewhat difficult to connect with its emotional nuances, but the film seemed to weave the deep-seated grievances of an isolated rural town into black comedy quite effectively. With no young people left, there is no future, and as the insular society grows thicker, the town isolates itself and regresses. Even the local police force is simply part of this closed-off community—the most primitive of structures. Meanwhile, they constantly sneer at outsiders, scoffing, "Berlin? A university professor? A high-income earner?" They are brimming with dissatisfaction, yet have zero intention of actually resolving anything. Even the funeral, wrapped up with a beautiful song declaring that whoever loses carries the entire burden, feels utterly insular and exclusionary. With people acting this terrifyingly hostile, who on earth would ever want to live in the countryside? "I only sleep with people wearing coats when I'm running from the cops, so how about a bet on who pays for the drinks by downing five shots of vodka?" The car camper who accepts that bet from someone who was just bawling their eyes out, casually ditching work to go on a countryside road trip together—their absolute freedom in life is completely insane.
