I’m not sure what business decisions led to this version being greenlit and produced, though there is more new Steins;Gate in the pipeline so perhaps this was to be the vehicle to remind fans why they loved the game and find some new fans in the process. Whatever the reason, Re:Boot is the definitive edition of a true giant of the visual novel genre. As long as you can get along with the tweaked art direction, I doubt you’re going to have any complaints with Re:Boot.

STEINS;GATE's place in the medium hardly needs explaining. It has long since established itself as one of the most successful visual novels ever made. With STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT completely remaking the original using modern technology, there was little reason to expect much in the way of new content. All it really needed to do was preserve as much of the original experience as possible. Fortunately, STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT does a pretty good job of that, at least more so than STEINS;GATE ELITE.

This is, to my tastes, the best version of Steins;Gate - but I don't necessarily see that being the universal opinion. If you've never read or experienced the story, I have no qualms suggesting you start here; I just can't help but wish this wasn't effectively the only option on the market for so many players.

STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT doesn’t radically rewrite a classic, but its sharper pacing, expressive new artwork, rebuilt audio, and fresh Gamma Worldline make this trip back to 2010 Akihabara feel worthwhile. A single lingering interface quirk and a few still image cutes keep it from being definitive, yet the Future Gadget Lab remains as clever, charming, and emotionally affecting as ever.

Playing through STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT as someone who has never really read or played the original or the ELITE re-release was a great experience from beginning to end. While there are some frustrations with a lack of subtitles on images and the text crunch, I feel like I now understand just why people hold this game in such high regard. Once those issues I've mentioned have been ironed out, I can safely say this could be perfect for those looking to learn more about Rintaro and his journey.

Steins;Gate Re:Boot is its own unique spin on the original game, and it doesn’t do anything directly wrong to change the previous attempts, making this remake stuck in a sort of limbo. It isn’t by any means a bad game — you still get a memorable experience, and it’s even got some new bells and whistles in the form of new routes. However, it isn’t anything particularly exciting, at least in my eyes.

Steins;Gate Re:Boot preserves the original visual novel’s excellent character writing, emotional relationships, and carefully constructed story, but struggles to justify its existence as yet another remake. Its refreshed art, new voice work, Observer Mode, and added Moeka route provide some welcome additions, yet the abridged foundation, rushed pacing, limited narrative expansion, and underwhelming new content make the original release difficult to recommend over.
