Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War delivers chaotic bug-splatting action with satisfying old-school FPS gameplay, huge maps, and plenty of fan service for the cult sci-fi franchise.

If you can put up with the graphics and 2D models, you'll be treated to a story that takes place after the 1997 film that offers intense action, good music, an entertaining setup, and a retro style that works. If you like Starship Troopers and classic Doom or Boltgun, you should check this out, as it's simply really entertaining.

While the core gameplay is engaging (albeit cut short by a relatively short runtime), the satirical throughline in the story, character interactions, and live-action cutscenes make for a very entertaining experience. Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is a great little piece of satire hidden behind a goofy, fun sci-fi shooter, doing a great job of reflecting the film that inspired it.

Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is a fun shooter that relies on old-school gameplay mechanics paired with a more modern game structure, paired with a fun B-movie-styled campaign with excellent pacing.

The one-liners, the comical levels of violence, and the retro vibes that are creeping back into the gaming industry (which I love). Its only weaknesses lie in the lack of needing some of the extra bells and whistles within the game itself.

If you get a kick out of Starship Troopers’ brand of satire and enjoy a good old-fashioned throwback shooter, Ultimate Bug War! will be a comfort food kind of game for you. It’s simple fun, uncomplicated in exactly the way a shooter of this ilk should be, has a noticeable appreciation for its source material, and doesn’t overstay its welcome besides. Does it bring anything new to the table that might cause someone not fitting this description to go out of their way? Probably not, but in the wide, chaotic world of video games based on movies, this one is worth checking out for prospective citizens.
