Terrible Art. It looks terrible. Pure garbage. The game is bad because the company hired a bunch of diversity hires. The studio should have hired people that enjoy games not posers. They likely talk imposter syndrome because they are imposters. Everything they infiltrate themselves into turns to slop.

I don't agree with the negative reviews. Check Steam and you will see glaringly few negative reviews. That's the biggest issue, on here you don't have to have played to review a game and say "iz trasssssssh." This game offers a lot of unique things. I was a big fan of Arc Raiders, decided to jump onto Marathon after server slam, and I found myself having that pvpe itch scratched so often. I genuinely enjoy the responsiveness. Some criticize the bright colors, but in all honesty? That's what I love. I know that the moment I don't see myself surrounded by bright colors, I am in the open and that means I'm in danger. The game takes some getting used to. There's a lot to learn, but as you play it, you will grasp a lot. You eventually wont need to read stuff you loot. Track what you need, grab it and get out. There's a LOT of quests to be found too that reward you with weapons, powerups, and items for future runs as well. As I level up and complete quests I find my deaths to be less of an issue. Most of my PvP encounters start with head on gunfights and seldom do I ever see people camping exfil sites which is awesome. Bungie countered the camping exfil problem by making them invisible until x amount of time has passed. Then when it's used, you find a new one. Solo play is very challenging, and the game warns you of this. As you get better weapons the AI becomes very easy to take on as one would expect. Guns rarity doesn't affect the overall damage it can do, instead it opts to increase other stats on it, so the playing field will never be tilted more one way vs the other. All in all I find this to be a very fun fast paced extraction shooter that has surprisingly scratched my itch for a TRUE PvPvE experience. I can't wait to see all the seasonal changes that occur at resets!

I played the first playtest a long time ago, and I really liked it because I felt the game had a lot of potential, and surely the best features were still to come. Upon release, I was heartbroken to see no real progress had been made. The amount of wasted potential in this game genuinely breaks my heart. I'm mostly going to focus on the negatives here, but honestly, it's not all bad. People who give this game a 1/10 are being hyperbolic. In that same vein, people who give the game a 10/10 are also being dishonest. The art and music direction are both pretty good. But without anything else, the game feels more like an elaborate visual arts project than a video game. On the surface there's a lot of glamor and sheen, but once you cut into it, it's hollow. The gameplay lacks immersion, depth, and originality. The movement is somehow both too fast and too slow. The user interface is lackluster and not very nice to look at. The first two maps (Perimeter and Dire Marsh) are poorly designed and boring. (Maybe better ones will come, but this is what the game released with.)
There’s a general lack of content. Something as simple as adding a shooting range or neutral hub would go a long way. Every opportunity to introduce a unique or engaging mechanic was missed. Instead, the game sticks solely to safe, predictable formulas, all of which are done better by contemporaries. The game comes off as unsure of what it really wants to achieve and ultimately doesn't do anything well. I think a lot of the assets would be better served in a different game mode. TDM, Search and Destroy, battle royale, or horde modes would all have been better formats if Bungie knew they didn’t want to take any risks. Maybe more game modes will come later on, but it's unlikely given how immediately they would outshine the extraction mode. This game will hit the mark for some, but it's not there yet for me.

Game is pure nightmare fuel, awful character design, awful art design, simple gameplay loop. Bungie is only Bungie in name, the talent that once worked here is long gone.

I'll give it a 2 only because of the shooting. It's not as interesting to play as Arc Riders. Stealth and silence are the only obstacles. The visual style is just awful for my eyes... It's good that you can get a refund on Steam.!

I honestly can’t understand what Bungie was thinking with the PvP balance in **** matchmaking feels completely broken. As a new or low-gear player you constantly get thrown into matches against fully geared squads who clearly have hundreds of hours in the game. You spawn with basic equipment and get deleted in seconds by players running optimized builds. This isn’t a fair fight. It’s not even close.Instead of being a tense extraction shooter, the experience turns into pure frustration. You spend 20 minutes gearing up just to lose everything instantly to players who massively outclass you in both gear and **** game ends up feeling like a strange mix of Counter-Strike and a battle royale — but without the balance of the former or the accessibility of the latter. It’s hyper-competitive, punishing, and unforgiving to anyone who isn’t already fully geared and **** what makes it worse is the disconnect between what the game tries to be and how it actually ****’re told this is a game with “deep lore,” but in reality it plays like a hyper-competitive esports shooter where your average lifespan is 1–3 minutes. You barely have time to understand what’s happening before running into another squad — and once shots are fired, more players swarm the area immediately. There is no time to explore. No time to read item descriptions. No time to engage with the **** of 20 matches, I might extract successfully 3–5 times — and even then, it’s usually just running away rather than actually **** what lore are we even talking about?Right now Marathon feels less like a game and more like a stressful PvP grinder where casual players are just cannon **** Bungie doesn’t fix matchmaking, pacing, and gear balance, new players will simply **** the moment, Marathon isn’t fun — it’s just stress.

As an extraction shooter it does everything right, the quest/contract system is good, the lore is good and cohesive with the faction themes, the UI might seems difficult at the beginning "at a glance" but once you learn the items everything becomes quite easy to understand. The gunplay is very fun and the TTK is also very well balanced. The learning curve is steep like old school games and might be a bit too sweaty for the casual audience but besides Arc raiders the other extraction shooters are also time sinking games,it's the DNA of the genre. Design is subjective you might not like it, personally i like it a lot. The industrial sci-fi mixed with graphic realism is very intresting. Wipeout like design still contemporary even 31 years after it's release. Overall Marathon is a good product imho and if you like extraction shooters you might get hooked after 5-10 hours of gameplay.

Best gunplay/movement I have ever seen in an extraction shooter. Also a victim of review bombing from hordes of people unhappy with destiny / sony / being a rival to arc and many others situation.

Marathon is hard and confusing but that is where it gets its charm. I've been playing since launch and I'm still learning so many things. It's also challenging. Both AI and human alike pose threats but that adds to the excitement. I've been playing a as a solo and have found so many friendly people. The fact teammates benefit from contracts really goes a long way to comraderie. I look forward to playing it every night.

This is my review of the Marathon game, in my opinion Marathon is a really great game that i really like. Personally, this means a lot to me in the sense that i waited and waited for a really long time for Marathon to be released for many years since i first saw the advertisement, i can't say anything but that i love this! <3 Now that Marathon has finally come to March 5, 2026, i was really excited and even happy about it, i still am, my feelings towards this game will never fade. Because this is also in an amazing genre that i also really like, it can't be over or under, that's just the way it is!. Finally, i want to thank all of you Marathon developers, you have really done a really great job for all of us Marathon fans, for that, a big thank you to you, keep up the good work, it will be good. <3 See you starside

Its awesome.
I bought Arc Raiders on release, played 3 hrs and abandoned it 4ever. It never catches me.
However The Marathon has its itch to everything basically. Its design, graphics style, sound and music, shooting mechanics as well as the story and missiaons - are on a next level..This is it - a breath of fresh air. entertaining and fun.
good job Bungie!!

I am giving Marathon a rightful 10/10 and that would be regardless of the current wave of review bombing which blatantly misses the soul of what makes this game so spectacular. You see, Marathon is not your standard multiplayer trend-chaser; it’s a game born from a clear, uncompromising vision and executes on that vision unapologetically. When you spend your own time designing and building games from the ground up, you can instantly recognize when a project is driven by raw passion rather than a corporate checklist. It honestly feels like Bungie simply set out to build the exact bizarre, beautiful sci-fi universe they wanted to create, and it only happened to land in the "extraction shooter" genre as a side effect of that artistic vision. To understand how strong that initial lure is, you have to know I am not a shooter player. I haven’t seriously played a shooter since I was a teenager grinding Halo 3 on Xbox Live. My usual gaming diet consists entirely of deep fantasy RPGs—give me the tactical, story-rich worlds of games like BG3 or Divinity over a twitch-shooter any day... But the fact that a hardcore sci-fi extraction shooter managed to pull me entirely out of my fantasy comfort zone speaks volumes about how deeply the raw passion of this project resonated with me ever since that initial cinematic trailer reveal. The aesthetic and the world are just peculiar and bizarre enough to pique your interest, and the game doesn't really even emphasize its backstory, but it gives you just enough to know it has one—and one that is deep, rich, and compelling. Once you start pulling at the narrative threads and realize exactly why Runners exist, it gives every single match a whole new level of meaning and immersion. Playing it just feels epic. Going back and re-watching that cinematic trailer from about year ago hits completely differently now that I have actually played the game and know more about the backstory, and all I can say is that it leaves me hungering for more. Why it may not be a game universally accepted by all is simply because the extraction shooter genre is inherently tense, frustrating, and unforgiving. Most people don't look to their leisure time to be placed in such discomfort. But that friction is the point. The staggering stakes are exactly what make the game so overwhelmingly compelling and rewarding when you actually manage to come out on top, but it’s an acquired taste. It demands your attention, tests your nerves, and delivers an unforgettable experience for those who recognize the gem that it truly is. Bungie should be nothing short of proud for crafting the absolute masterpiece that is Marathon, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here!

This game is such a good example of what bungie does well. Playing solo can be scary, suspenseful and rewarding. Playing with friends is all that but slightly less scary because you'll be too busy trying to steal loot from each other. Dont knock it before you truly try it. This game has the visuals, the gun play and the sound design you dream of when you throw a headset on.

This game has me in it's clutches right now. Loving the gunplay and the game loop is very addicting especially once you get into all the puzzles and late game activities.

Before your scroll away this isn’t going to be like oh I hate bungie and this game should die off. Here’s why I gave it a 1. For me I use a ryzen 5 7600 6 core with a Rtx 5050ti ram is 16. With that the game is just terrible to run. For me I had to being the game quality settings down so much that you would think a potato invaded my pc. For me I’m a 23 year old male and so my eyes are pretty good, so when I have to drop to 1080p and low settings on everything it really shows to me. I’m sit of people gloating how good this game is when there literally an issue, the game just doesn’t run. Besides me only maxing out 100 fps, my memory is getting 80% used. For comparison I played resident evil requiem at 4K and the memory was like 60% or less. That’s stupid low for what’s been used in the cpu. I wasted 3 hours yes 3 hours trying to do what I could but barely any progress. So hear me out, forget marathon and buy something else, anything and just wait for bungie to actually fix the game and optimise it properly. A game on launch should not be having this issue, this is a simple they got rich streamers and people to play test this crap and in the end most players left are not even getting the performance they paid for on their pc.

It might seem a bit confusing and tricky at first, but once you’ve got the hang of it after 2–3 hours, it’s actually quite doable... and the game is more than just fun. Whether you’re playing solo or in a team, it’s brilliant. I really like the setting of the world!

The best extraction shooter! i dont undertand this hate.
I'm having a lot of fun with the game. I think the people who don't like the game are because they haven't given it a chance and don't quite understand the depth it has.

The visuals are really great: a mix of breathtaking alien nature and colorful human-built structures that feel strangely out of place.
Gunfights bring awesome feelings, the sound and weapon impact are so good.
The loot loop is good too, most of the loot feels useful, because it helps with faction upgrades and getting supplies and guns through exchange.
The soundtrack is so sick, truly on another level.
The plot is interesting to explore, cryptic, I like it.

It's the most fun I've had paying a game since Halo 3. The game takes a few hours of play until you begin to really understand how it works. Once you have that understanding the game is insanely fun. Gun play is amazing, abilities make every character unique. The ability to play by myself or with friends makes it a lot of fun whether I have people online to play with it not.

game is fine but nothing gameplay-wise really stands out. you can find better maps, better loot system, better gunplay elsewhere. nothing feels fresh or original except the artstyle. But Bungie never bother to make it feel immersive at any point. Maps are just blocks of color with no sense of immersion. Nothing is there to make you feel like you are on a sci-fi planet...

Awesome game. Excellent gunplay and movement in a deep and fascinating world. I personally love the art style and lore of this game. The PVP and PVE are satisfying and fun, the game really keeps the tension high. And like some other extraction shooters, losing gear is easy to recover from. I think a lot of people would like this game if they gave it a chance.

The art style really didn’t work for me. Everything looks the same and lacks visual identity, which makes the environments feel bland and repetitive. The UI is also a complete mess and often gets in the way instead of helping the player. Overall, the game just didn’t click for me. It’s not terrible, but there are simply better alternatives out there.

This game is blast if you sink some time into it. The depth of Destiny's build crafting along with the heart pounding tension of the extraction genre makes for a great pvp experience. If you're looking for great pvp competitive game, this is the one. See you out there, Runner.

Unjustly low ratings. Those who give negative reviews are just toothless pve amateurs who don't understand why they're getting into this game and this genre. The character leveling system based on reputation with factions is the best thing that's ever happened to extraction shooters.

its **** visuals are definitely different mostly female oriented but work. the gun play is mostly solid just needs some tweaking. the interface ****. has WAY too much going on the you need to take time to read what the hell you just got. guess over time you'll learn to recognize the icons. Biggest flaw...getting killed and losing all your stuff that you worked hard to get....really really a BIG let down.

Sony bought this company for $3.6 billion and this is what we get? Horrible PC performance, convoluted UI, and mediocre gun/gameplay? Save your time and money because Bungie does not respect either.

Despite the amount of toxic hate, this is a brilliant hardcore extraction shooter-flavoured game, with stunning art direction, amazing sound design, storied lore with awesome ARG conducted in ways not many can even conceive. Yes it is difficult and I got giving and with a steep learning curve, yes there are things to tune and improve, but as a game, it's shining and not something you are going to forget .

Well I'm hooked. Not an easy game, progress is slow and hard... but each match so far has been exciting and fresh. It has the classic Bungie gunplay and sandbox feel that will keep you coming back for more. The progression and rewards are a slow drip but they are there, even if you're only successfully surviving / extracting 25% of the time. The fact that some quests (errh, I mean contracts) can be completed without extracting is a saving grace, as are the infinite starter kits.18.5 hours in... not quite season rank 10... I've been playing with a friend (as a destroyer) and as a solo (assassin). I have mostly been playing on the first “Perimeter” map as it’s already plenty punishing. The world building, lore and esthetic all work for me. I don’t play with randos and I don’t have proximity chat turned on. I was wondering what new game would come along to scratch the Destiny raid and PVP competitive itch. Surprise, it's Marathon and it's here, and despite all the commentary about low concurrent player counts it’s actually very good. I think it will be eating up my free time quite regularly for the foreseeable future – I recommend it for anyone who likes sci-fi, shooters, and a challenge.

I personally did not like marathon. But I can appreciate what Bungie was going for and I think the people who enjoy a hard core extraction shooter are going to love this game! I lean more on the casual side so its not for me. Ill stick to arc raiders but Marathon is alot of fun to watch people play. There is alot of build creativity and I like the fact the weapon attachments determine rarity. That really opens things up for bungie to be creative with their weapon designs! I hope marathon succeeds and I hope we get a D3

Tons of potential. Incredible world building and atmosphere (audio, art design, etc) I hope they turn things around and make it less punishing, despite the vocal minority of the 'fanbase', though I think that's unlikely. Don't listen to the haters either though, it's clear they haven't even played the game. They have made a game that appeals to 0.0001% of players(Hardcore extraction shooter with scifi theme and Nerf gun graphics) and have succeeded in reaching that market. As it is now, they need to remove thief drone entirely(frustrating and not fun on the receiving end--fundamental game design flaw), add safe pockets and more extraction options, and/or have fewer people on a map (reverse the change the vocal minority & streamers wanted). Also it will probably turn a lot of people off to have things reset so drastically every 3 months. This is unlikely to happen as they might start to see failure and cling to the beck and call of the vocal minority as things spiral into failure. I hope not, because I want to be able to contribute to and enjoy this game in my free time, not have it become a 2nd career.

Finally, a real extraction shooter since Tarkov where you have to have balls. Great, unique, non-generic graphics that really bring this universe to life, awesome gunplay, cool gameplay loop, great characters and world-building, and on top of that, a great community . Unwarranted hatred and a barrage of negative reviews make one thing clear: Damn it, if they don't have the balls for this game, then I have to show that I do.

You guys really want to talk the failure into existence, is it so hard to accept that it's not the "Concord 3" you were hoping to see? Before i start my review: Who cares about the politics of Sony? Or that the development wasn't as smooth for Bungie?
[This has no place in a review or rating.] -The Game has a very unique design (you either hate it or love it)
-The story is pretty interesting if you take your time to listen/read all the logs, it dates way back from the very first title, and has as much depth, AI dystopia at its finest.
-The sound is outstanding, not only the score is perfectly crafted, the ambience makes you feel you're in a hostile place, the guns sound believable and nice, the spatial audio is really good if you're used to Hunt Showdown (which is the best spatial audio there is imo)
-The gameplay in one word "Hardcore" it's unforgiving, you lose every item on death but you also gain everything if you get on top, which will give you the highest highs and lowest lows, and yes it's true as many players stated "the fun comes after playing it for few hours" because you understand the system, your abilities and the freedom the game gives you, also if you like the gunplay in Destiny, you will also like the gunplay in Marathon because it's very similar. After 40 Hours i can say, it's a fun extraction shooter ,if you like challenging games with a sci-fi design, try it out, but be warned it's pretty rage inducing. I would give it a 7 but the recent review bombing needs to be pushed down so I'll leave it at an 8.

Bungie has reclaimed its throne as the king of shooters with Marathon, delivering a 10/10 experience for anyone who values tactile, best-in-class gunplay and a revolutionary art direction that swaps tired grit for a striking, neon-industrial aesthetic. The gameplay loop is masterfully tuned, balancing the high-stakes tension of an extraction shooter with a persistent "Codex" progression system that ensures your efforts always feel rewarded, even when a run goes sideways. It’s a bold, polished evolution of the genre that feels both nostalgically "Bungie" and entirely futuristic.

Incredible art and graphics. Great gameplay loop, loot. Top gunplay, great lore. Also devs do community events, arg puzzles etc. Best shooter of the decade.
