Backpack Hero is an excellent roguelike that should be on everyone's radar. Every moment of the game is fun to play, the story is solid, and the meta progression is deeply satisfying. It's everything a good roguelike should be, and I'm going to continue playing it as soon as I finish writing this paragraph.

Backpack Hero makes Deck Building easy by replacing a deck of cards with a backpack, and has some seriously unique ideas.

I have, quite frankly, have been bored of video games lately. Most are the 3rd person action RPG with the random licensed IP, or have a sprawling sandbox world that takes hundreds of hours to complete. Or they just have a boring and repetitive game loop. After months of searching for something to scratch "that itch", I finally found it in Backpack Hero. I've been taking advantage of all the free games offered on GoG or Epic and most are something I'll play for a few days and get bored... that is, until I found this gem. This normally isn't my type of game at all but I became hooked immediately. I can't put this game down and find myself playing until 2am, like the good old days of the early Civ series. Why is this so addictive? Thanks to the HUNDREDS of random pickups you can unlock and find there are nearly infinite cool powerful combos you can create. The more you play the more crazy gear you unlock and the more unique quests you can try. What I like is that many quests force you to change your tactics and try something new. My favorite being one where the only weapons you find are hammers and you earn no shield or armor just "structure" which you build in your inventory. Then there's magic focused quests, bow/arrow centric missions and so on. You can also unlock other characters in this game and they aren't just reskins... they drastically alter the game play for each. Like the first new character, instead of just unlocking 3 chosen backpack slots at a time, you are given 4 slot rigid Tetris-like pieces that you have to had to your pack with unique gear that gives bonuses to backpack "pockets" that aren't connected to others. So fun and unique. The average quest is fairly easy, but higher tier heroes have some very challenging missions that can be difficult and take time mastering. There's also a town-building aspect to unlocking new content so if you enjoy games like **** Valley, then Backpack Hero might be your bag. ;)

Backpack Hero is basically a “organize your backpack” simulator, but it’s much more complex than it looks. On top of that, you unlock new characters, each with their own traits and **** game also offers a city-building aspect, which unlocks new elements and challenges. In truth, it was very close to being perfect. The story is sadly very shallow, the soundtrack is bland, and the building aspect could have been more developed. And of course, we’d love more characters! Still, none of that takes away from the pleasure of this “comfort game”, which has become one of my favorites! Highly recommended!!!

Backpack Hero has a unique core mechanic that works. I liked constantly thinking of what I wanted to pick up and how I could create combos by placing items just right. There are a ton of possibilities, even if combat itself often feels limited and repetitive. Story mode adds an interesting twist with town building and management, although the story hooks aren’t that strong. The game is best enjoyed in short sessions, exploring just enough to put down a new building or reach another milestone. Backpack Hero succeeds at creating a fun gameplay loop for a very specific audience.

Despite floundering a bit with meta-progression mechanics, Backpack Hero is still a thoroughly entertaining deckbuilding roguelike. Its use of item management as a central game mechanic is wildly inventive, and I consistently wanted to reenter the dungeon just to explore new item synergies. I do wish the town sections didn’t drag the pace of the main campaign as much as they did. But even if you strictly use the Quick Game mode, Backpack Hero is still a worthwhile venture.

There’s plenty to enjoy from balancing the equipment of Backpack Hero. Like fitting everything into a suitcase, figuring out where everything slots in can be very satisfying. However, there are plenty of rough edges. The story mode falls flat fast and the presentation fades quickly into the background. The gameplay loop is so richly varied that finding new ways to break the game with a build is always entertaining, it is just a shame that the presentation surrounding this gameplay is so lackluster.

PC Invasion
Backpack Hero offers some neat adventures worth experiencing, but you'll have to grapple with a persistently irritating interface and other rough edges to find them all.

Чудова оригінальна гра. Єдине - не продуманий менеджмент міста. Складнісь не регулюється, що теж простір для покращення.
