Moments of backtracking should’ve been cut down, but most segments ended before they became a problem. Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale, while short, is packed to the brim with charm, passion, and heart. This is an adventure I will be thinking about for quite a while.

Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale looks like a cute, colorful adventure at first glance, but it slowly reveals a surprisingly raw story about trauma, rejection, and learning to deal with those feelings. It’s not flawless with some puzzles and mini-games stumbling. But its earnestness and twists make it a short, memorable trip that’s worth taking.

Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale is a bit short, and some of its side characters feel underdeveloped. Even so, Quillo Entertainment Limited has crafted a game filled with heart. That passion shines through in every frame, showcasing an impressive level of artistry that’s only slightly held back by budgetary constraints. In the end, Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale is a gentle, gorgeous experience that will warm your heart while lingering in your thoughts thanks to its surprising emotional depth.

Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale is a promising debut for Quillo Entertainment. The game looks and sounds great, and its hand-drawn art style makes it stand out from other indie games. While the initial story isn’t particularly original compared to other titles in the genre, its twists and turns become more creative and entertaining the further you progress in the game. That said, the minigames could have done with a bit more work and polish. This could be due to the long development cycle. However, a bit more focus on which minigames to include and how to present them would have elevated this title from good to great for me. If you want to experience Apopia for yourself, you can buy it on Steam for Mac and PC. There is even a demo that includes the prologue, so if you’re hesitant, you can see if the game satisfies your sweet tooth before buying it.

Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale is a nice experience with a hefty number of minor bugs, but a story that more than makes up for it. The title is unique, funny, and sometimes dark and mysterious, so I recommend it for people who put story first when playing games.
