Ancient Enemy is a chilled out take on Solitaire underneath a RPG card battler. It’s not the longest of games, the narrative is a little rote and if you really dig into the mechanics early on, you can find combinations of attacks and special abilities that make the game a touch too early. That being said, it looks fantastic, sets a brooding tone through its music and writing and, as card battlers go, is really quite enjoyable to play. This game won’t be for anyone but if you’re into the niche, or you’ve enjoyed Grey Aliens other games like Shadowhand, this is certainly worth a look.

Ancient Enemy mixes Solitaire gameplay with turn-based battles to forge something unique and wonderful. It has a few rough edges, but still provides comforting nostalgia in a pressing time for many.

Ancient Enemy isn’t bad, and is one of the better ways you can reinvent Solitaire-esque games. But it is still a Solitaire-esque game, and that makes it hard to recommend to anyone who isn’t a fan of the genre. Add that with the resistances and inventory mechanics slowing down the game proper, and it’s a tough sell. If everything I mentioned here sounds appealing, give it a shot. Everyone else, proceed with caution.

Ancient Enemy is a nice little card battler. Most reviews here criticize the story, but I see the monologues of the main character more as the setting. The brooding tone, the enemy design and the epic music, set a fantastic, dark atmosphere. The card battling itself is fun, and more on the easy side. Trust me, play it on Nightmare Mode, that is the actual normal mode, do not let the name discourage you. Your active abilities, the wild cards and the ability to see the cards underneath the top enable you to add strategy to Solitaire, which is originally very luck-based. My only gripe is that the gameplay is not the most fitting to the atmosphere. I like both the gameplay (and I do not think it should be harder), but as it is so easy, it betrays the hopeless and dark tone of the game. However, this is barely relevant compared to the joy of hitting a 25 card combo and obliterating your foes with it.

Un juego de corte casual que no requiere de mucho tiempo para aprender las mecánicas, su gameplay es sencillo pero satisfactorio. No es un juego muy ambicioso pero cumple con su propósito de entretener.

Ancient Enemy isn't a terrible game, but it's a vastly inferior version of Shadowhand. The story is thin to the point of being non-existent, but the repetitive narrative keeps coming anyway.

Overall, Ancient Enemy is an incredibly enjoyable game and one that is unlike anything else I’ve played. It feels like it’s been inspired by many of my favourite oddities, but it puts them together in a way that is completely its own, and I adore that about it. The story and exposition can occasionally overstay their welcome, but that won’t be an issue for a lot of people. It’s certainly a game that’ll have you ready to shuffle the deck and start the next round, and that’s the best thing about card games.

I don't usually enjoy card games, but Ancient Enemy was enjoyable and relaxing. The game is quick to learn and plays easy.
