Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 29
Jul 11, 2024
[DISCLAIMER: REVIEW FOR THE ORIGINAL SNES VERSION] Super Mario World... I was not familiar with your game. I can't believe this game has remained unspoiled for me for this many years, but I'm happy it was. I had never even seen what the final boss looked like. The reason for this is probably because there's so much variety in every single level that it's hard to make any single idea stick in your mind. At this point, Miyamoto's game design philosophy is well-known, but seeing put into practice like this is incredible. Blows modern 2D Mario out of the water, easily the best of the bunch, understandable why this game became the formula for decades to come. STILL NOT BETTER THAN DONKEY KONG COUNTRY DOE

On the same level as KH2, feels different in its combat, but in a way that makes it irreplaceable. I do not remember enjoying the length of the final boss, essentially carving out its entire own section, but I think if I played this again, I would appreciate the scale of it all. "SUBMIT!"

Kingdom Hearts III4

I played Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 right before I started this game, so I know this is not nostalgia blinding me when I say there is an unimaginable level of drop-off in charm. Kingdom Hearts 1 is a little choppy, but still an overall great time, and honestly I appreciate the fact that it came before we got so bogged down in lore. KH3 is the polar opposite. You can hardly run for 2 minutes before getting caught up in yet another 5 minute cutscene filled with terribly paced, written, and delivered dialogue. For my sanity, I eventually had to start indiscriminately skipping cutscenes, and sometimes it would be a sequence of 3 or 4 separate cutscenes all stringed together. And it ****, because the core gameplay is fun enough. The new key blade mechanics are a little overpowered at points, but the combat can still be a ton of fun. If you removed the cutscenes from this game, it would raise the score by at least a couple points. The variety of gameplay sections is welcome, but when I'm skipping the dialogue, there's no context, and no real emotional anchor. You could say that's on me, I suppose, but there's also no chance in hell I would finish this game if I couldn't skip them. Hard to understate how much the writing drags this game down.

Metroid: Zero Mission7
Jul 3, 2024
A great experience that could've spared an objective marker or two. I understood Zero Mission to be the even-handed response to Fusion's most infamous aspect: Linearity. As it turns out, Zero Mission is just about as straight-forward as Fusion, save for a dialog box explicitly telling you where to run. I have no problem with linearity in a Metroid game, and in fact, I welcome it as a breezy counterpart to something like Super Metroid. My issue with Zero Mission is its difficulty, or lack thereof. Never did I fear for my life, and the spare moments of genuine challenge are immediately deflated once you realize you saved 30 seconds before you died. There are difficult rooms with crazy tight platforming, difficult enemy placements, etc., but I have no reason to actually worry when there's no real punishment. All that aside, one of the best-looking games in the series. Great colors, and a fake-out of an ending I genuinely did not see coming. When I initially killed Mother Brain, I didn't realize there's a whole other section to the game that completely flips the script on you. I was a little annoyed at first. Once I saw I was about to enter a whole stealth section when I thought I was done, I was just like, "Man, **** this ****, I'm doing this later." But it offered a completely fresh gameplay experience that I was happy to play once I got around to it. I can't believe I didn't know about it before, but it made for a welcome surprise.

the longer I think back on this game, the longer I see it as a crowning achievement in every aspect. The smoothness of combat/movement, the way you slither around the map seamlessly, the perfect balance between open-endedness and clear objectives. A perfect sprinkling of bread crumbs to the end, and one of the best final bosses I’ve ever played. Only slight I can say against it is the shocking and borderline offensive lack of accessibility features. I’m lucky that I, say, have all my fingers, can hear properly and can see properly, because if u have any of those issues, ur kinda SOL on this game

I picked this game up years ago, did the classic thing of playing approximately 5% of it before giving up on it like the crybaby I am. I restarted and beat it a few months ago, and it stands in my mind as the equivalent of a “prestige” game in the Metroidvania genre. I have the same issue everyone else does with the insta-kill spikes, but they never really ruined my experience. I was sometimes surprised by how obtuse the game was willing to go, multiple times not giving me an inkling of a direction, forcing me to stumble upon an entire new area that wound up being the right path forward. Parry mechanic is very fun, though certain combat abilities, like the charged attack, felt useless in a game that makes me feel like planting my feet in one spot for more than a second is a death sentence.

Pokemon Shining Pearl7

In some ways, incredibly frustrating. In others, too smooth for its own good. The exp. share, notorious at this point, carried me through the game. Save for type advantages, you're never incentivized to use a Pokemon for any good reason. Any Pokemon that's lagging in levels will remain that way until every Pokemon floats around the same level for the rest of the game. Also, the movement controls border on terrible. Never has a Pokemon game required dexterity while navigating the world, and yet, there were one-space wide walkways placed right next to a ledge that truly tested my abilities to swing my character at a tight enough angle to not accidentally hop down the ledge. With all these issues in mind, the core game is still great, still overall a recommendable Pokemon game, especially on switch.

An aesthetically beautiful game. Generally great dungeons, generally boring/obtuse as **** overworld progression. The fusestone mechanic had potential, but I simply stopped caring about their rewards by the end. Some side quests are so ridiculous/high effort that I didnt even touch them after I found out the amount of work I'd have to put into it. Amazing final boss sequence, tho.

Undeniable choice for the Wii U's best game, genuine contender for the Switch's best at this point. So fun, such amazing atmosphere, controls/gameplay that feels like its about to get overwhelming, but always makes it *just* manageable enough.

Unreal levels of fun, think about replaying this game quite often. Would only say that the difficulty can get a bit uneven towards the end, but otherwise perfect.

I wish to live here. Perfect controls, some of the best music/overall atmosphere in a video game. Might sound silly, but the time trial I consider equally essential to the game as championship mode.

Amazing how for how the controls are technically outdated, it still doesn't take much at all to fully grasp them. Truly a timeless masterpiece, one of the best games I've ever played.
