Project Hail Mary

Hail Mary is a great science fiction book and an even better movie. There were aspects of the story that my imagination couldn't fully create for me, which the movie brought to life. The movie has drama and humor and the strength of ordinary people. Ryan Gosling played the main character perfectly. He makes me think of Cary Grant, who was good looking, but he was also fun and good-natured. This was exciting and fun.

This is a delightful movie that takes me back to romantic comedies with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. But if you're not into wholesome, grownup relationship stories that lack vulgarity, this is not for you.

If Hawke and Scott don't get Oscars, I will be disappointed. Ditto for the director and writer. This was completely fascinating and every character was beautifully acted. The script was brilliant. I'm old enough to know all of the references and to feel my insight into those times and those characters deepen for having seen it.

As a member of a hillbilly family from Michigan, this story resonates with me. I'm not sure I've ever seen a movie set in this version of the Midwest before. When I have told East coast friends that lower Michigan includes huge numbers of hillbillies from Kentucky and Tennessee, they have been surprised. The story was well-told with amazing performances that mirrored the real-life characters extremely well. I think harsh critics don't understand or value this part of America. But it's also a story about the costs of addiction for poor families. And it shows how two children rose above their difficult circumstances and that, of course has that ring of patriotic pride that critics hate.

We loved this movie. It was fascinating to see how stunts are done and the crazy dangers that are undertaken. The love story was charming and amusing. And the action was continuous and exciting. It was fun from start to finish.

This is a wonderful movie and an effective therapy treatment for anyone who is open to it. I am a mental health counselor who had never heard of Phil Stutz. But I resonate with his desire to get right to the problem with patients. His simple tools are inspiring to me. Also, he and Jonah Hill reveal themselves and their lives in ways that are both touching and helpful in applying Stutz's philosophy. I'm sure I will share these ideas with others and use them for my own healing.

Ignore the bad scores. This is an entertaining movie. The acting is good and the story is good. We used to call this sort of movie a "made-for-TV-movie." And that's an insult that means it won't get an Oscar. But who cares?

This was a thoughtful movie with subtle performances by the main two characters as well as the excellent supporting actors. Such a nice break from the usual murder/action/whatever that we watch.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

We read the reviews, but went anyway. And I loved it! It's a fine continuation of this campy, creepy, supposed-to-be-real story of the Warrens and their campaign against evil. Someone who reviewed was annoyed by the religious theme, which is hilarious because that's the world these movies are set in. If you don't like Christianity and Western Civilization, please avoid movies about demons and vampires. You're bound to see some crosses and hear some prayers! There's no beating the original Conjuring. But this story is compelling and scary and holds together well. There are some great new characters: a possessed kid and a deeply in-love teenaged couple. And the love story of the Warrens themselves is told. Just go. It's fun.

This is a brilliant movie. It has a clever backstory to Cruella of the cartoon version. The casting is marvelous, the costuming is fun, and there's a continuous stream of perfectly curated songs to go with this entertaining story.

Let Him Go

This movie is a welcome break from the frenetic, manic, self-conscious and market-driven entertainment that is so abundant. I watch that other stuff, but it's tiring the way politics is tiring. Let Him Go is a movie that feels real because the dialog is so spare and the characters are in highly dramatic circumstances of the sort that ordinary people find themselves in. Of course, the stars are more attractive than most people I know. And if we had another half hour of movie time to use, I would have appreciated more development of the back story of the bad guys. But this was a rewarding movie-going experience with a good story, good acting, beautiful scenery from Montana and South Dakota that is hardly ever featured in movies I watch, the values of middle America, the courage of ordinary people, the evil of ordinary people and a realistic time piece set in the late 60s. Beautifully done.

Why can't critics get on board with a good ol' horror flick? This movie is a good time. The acting is great. The use of psychiatric diagnosis is an interesting device. One critic didn't like that atheism gets a bad rap in a horror film. That's hilarious. If you start watching it, you'll watch it to the end. Very entertaining.

What could be more delightful than the lovely Audrey Hepburn and the humorous, handsome and charming Carey Grant? Charade is the perfect vehicle to enjoy them. It has a fascinating thriller plot, which is presented quite seriously with convincing bad guys, while the stars keep the romance light and funny. It's the Hitchcock movie that he didn't make, but anyone who loves those movies simply must see Charade. There's a noticeable age difference between these blockbuster stars, and I love how it is handled directly with humor. One of my all-time favorite movies.

I'm not an automatic Will Ferrell fan, but my husband and I laughed all the way through this movie. It followed the traditional framework while blowing up with ridiculous glee. Both stars are delightful, as are the supporting actors, the latter could easily play it straight. Both guys have silly love relationships which are a stitch. Go ahead and see it no matter what the reviews say.
