Operencia: The Stolen Sun9

If you've seen pictures of this game you know what kind of game it is, in that regard it perfectly fulfils the genre and then some by adding interesting in meaningful characters. They did include 1 woke character that was cliche and groan inducing but it hardly occupies your time and you can just hit skip. I played on hard difficulty, and that really stressed the combat mechanics. I'm going to assume it works out on normal, but on difficult magic based classes were too divided in stats to be effective. You need intelligence for damage, but also agility to hit when your spells are on cooldown. On top of that, you'll need heavy amounts of wisdom and vigor just to not get 1 shotted. They really should have polished that up better. Maybe it will be fine on normal difficulty, but for hard, you best roll a warrior. All in all, it was a great edition to the genre, and a major improvement on what has traditionally been voiceless characters that have no personality.

If you like point and click games like "King's Quest" you will like this game. It has a beautiful world, a fun plot, and lots of great puzzles with a lot of variety. You can view every "interaction point" so there is no need to hunt around with your mouse. Every attempt on an interaction point gives fully voiced dialogue, and most items have a dialogue specific to those items. I found the interactions to be pretty coherent up and until the 3rd game (though I might have just been tired). The minigames are skip-able if you can't pass them, and good walkthroughs exist. I would only buy this version if you want a cheap demo. This is a 3 part game and you will want to finish the story, so buy the version that comes with all 3 parts.

For those with religious concerns, there is a BI character, who is in your group. However very little appears made of it, with the exception of a 24bit hug or **** hard to tell. The story is incredible. The main story dialogue is well written, always interesting and genuinely funny. Art is gorgeous for Retro. The dialogue art is a mixed bag. Some characters do well with a more cartoonish appearance whereas others, like bad guys, or a necromancer fail to come off as intense. **** art serves the comedy very well. (not to say the game isn't serious at points... it is) The music is memorable, like it was with some of the old SNES titles. I don't think it's composed by the creators but it is still outstanding. Combat is good if you put the difficulty up a notch. Characters level up collectively, so you don't have to regrind for other characters. There are skill points to attribute, and rather than buy new weapons every time to find a new town they have you craft weapons. But don't worry, there is no fuss with the crafting system, it's just there to scale your stats not sink your time. I haven't made it to the end, but so far it is a well paced game, interesting, enjoyable, and other than the minor okeness, which, so far, is a miniscule and forgettable portion of the game, it is fantastic.

Best game I have played in a long time. The story is so good, and the progress of the battle so detailed that it makes you wonder if you are playing a game based on books, or a movie. Combat is strategic with various options and builds for each character. Graphics are fantastic. Music is good, but appears to have been used in other games. Combat animations are very satisfying. With a new game+ it has lots of replay value which allows you to play stronger and get more rapport with the characters. I only experienced two issues. 1) If you have the graphics up high, the UI can be sluggish. I never experienced sluggish combat, just in the UI. 2) Game did not allow high resolution through my DVI cable, I had to switch to HDMI to increase the resolution.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age6
Nov 2, 2022
A beautiful game that starts strong and then becomes about as shallow as Dragon Quest 1. If you like Pride Parades you will like this game. Later on in the game you will have to spend about 30minutes on a nearly world wide pride parade. The game is absolutely gorgeous, great crafting, and has a compelling story, but fails to deliver any sense of danger or gravity. Enemies come off like Hanna-Barbera cartoon villains both in appearance as well as dialogue. All combat, even bosses can be easily completed on full auto, and there is no way to change difficulty once your game has started. The main character does not speak at all except awkward grunts. The companions have no personality or anything interesting to say outside a few important cut scene, the NPCs say nothing important. It's just really really boring. It feels soulless. Nothing about it feels like a JRPG. I quit after about 45 hours because I just could not find a way to care about any of it and I have never quit a JRPG before. It just felt like I was playing a childs game. Oh, here is one of the worst parts. They don't have cutscenes, what they have is cut scene dialogue that pauses mid sentence waiting for you to press a button to move to the next sentence of dialogue. You can put this on auto but IT STILL PAUSES. So all the important developments in the story take place in a painfully slow manner, that just kills any sense tone to what happens. No voice actor can survive these kinds of pauses. It kills all immersion.

At the time of this writing it is still in beta, but the basic game is completed. I'ts just missing some balance polishing around crafting, magic items, and attunement. It's everything you would expect of a D&D game, with options to individual rules. It has a solid story, with lots of character personality, but it doesn't weigh you down with so loads of dialogue choices and long term responsibility. I found that refreshing from those games where entering a new town meant an hour of dialogue about things you don't care so much about. It's a good balance between story telling, and tactical combat. It's a good solid game like Baulders gate, but without the tedious dialogue decisions.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game10
Sep 21, 2021
This IS Ghostbusters the movie 3!! It nails everything about the ghostbusters franchise and carries the lore a lot further. The music is perfect, the voice actors ARE the Ghostbusters, the plot is like a mix of the movies and the cartoon. If you haven't seen the cartoon, it's just like ghostbusters, but they go off world a lot more, and you go into the spirit world quite a bit in the game. If you like ghostbusters even a little bit, get it, it's super cheap at this point. As far as a game it's polished, 0 bugs, you develop through most of the game though the upgrades run out before the last 20% of the game. Even though they run out you still have to think through your fights and progress because each weapon does different things. You still have the main proton weapon for capturing and weakening ghosts, and you have to lasso them into the trap like the movie. It's done so well you feel like you are in the movie, it looks and feels exactly the same. There are tons of easter eggs through out HQ, and each item you find in the field goes back to the HQ for more interactibles. Absolute blast, I rarely give a game a 10 but this is everything you want it to be.

This is a solid 8 held back to a 7.5 due to 2 universal bugs that cause a crash (they can be avoided without consequence),no great side quests or guild progress, and several broken side quest pointers. The graphics are good enough for the modern age, though the men in this game are horribly ugly. You play a girl but there is nothing woke or man bashing here. The Story is interesting, the game is mostly linear in it's progression but does not prevent backtracking, and doing quests whenever you want. There were no interesting quests, but the main story was good. Combat was fun, but spells were a little broken because they get turned off on boss fights (the only spell you need is the green dot one, and the moonblade dot) Overall it was a refreshingly new game, from a new perspective, and at this point is far cheaper than it's value so with a pick up. It doesn't drone on but keeps you at a regular pace without taking you off on long tangents. Go here, go there, do some meaningless things along the way for xp/gold. I never found myself wanting more from the side quest category though, I was happy to continue with the meat of the game and develop along the way.

This is going to be quick because I really want to get back to playing it. This is one of the best games I have ever played of this genre. It's kind of like Hell gate London but a lot more difficult, and no trash loot. It feels like Lords of the Fallen in difficulty, some say it's like Dark Souls but I haven't played that. The graphics are great. The sound is amazing - you hear the Brass tink of loading each bullet and what's really cool is you don't have to load the whole gun before you can fire. You can load 2 bullets and fire if that's what you want. You also don't have to switch weapons to pull down a rifle and go melee. They have progressed the genre a lot. I have died so many times but I just want to get back into it and do it all again. This is worth buying, and it's at a cheaper price than it needed to be.

A perfect blend of Micro RTS strategy with Anime style RPG. This game has expanded immensely from the first game, with a new class, larger story line, more skirmishes, and "squad stories" which bring life and personality to every member of your squad. I am just blown away at the level of quality and love they have put into this game. They made me feel for every single character in the story.

Best Pirate Game I have ever played. While some parts of the game like crafting may be left completely raw the rest of it is pure pirate joy! I took the sword and guns path and the combat was excellent, it was difficult which is a staple for this brand. You actually had to plan out your attacks by watching each of your opponents. The voodoo path I hear is not so good but I havn't tried that path yet. The story is great, the voice acting is great, the characters are great, music is great. You get to build your own crew, own your own pirate ship, find hordes of rare treasures that build your stats, and hunt down probably 30 treasure maps. Despite the unpolished areas the game I'm giving it a 9 because it's just so dang fun to play. Let me put it this way, even though Piranha bytes tends to put out games before they are ready I would buy any game they make but cause the core of what does get released is always enjoyable.

Remember Me9
Jan 14, 2018
I really liked this game. It has a great story, great graphics, and a great sound track that reminded me of Mass Effect. You can really tell they gave it their all. It's a linear game like gears of war, but it doesn't feel linear because you are never going straight forward. You are always turning and climbing up down and around. Combat is fun, with personal optimizations, and difficult but with plenty of room to recover from your mistakes. One of the biggest complaints is that the game hand holds you by putting small arrows to direct you toward where you should go next. It would take 40hrs to complete this game without those arrows because it's just not obvious where to go. Throughout the game you develop powers that allow you to get past environmental obstacles and manipulate physical puzzles. There are a few mental puzzles that were really fun to solve and there are some minigames where you have to manipulate someones memory to change their behavior. This isn't like picking a lock though. There is a sequence of video that you watch and try changing small aspects of the memory to achieve the affect. Characters are very well acted and voiced. You care about these people. It's a great game, and really cheap at this point. If you are looking for a fun scifi game to play one weekend go out and buy it.

The game play is a 9 for me. Beautiful world, awesome fast paced gameplay, and a sound track that pumps you up. You reload by tossing your weapon away and holstering new ones. Or you can throw them at an enemy to reload faster. Hand guns draw from your hips, shot guns draw from over you shoulder. You can also teleport to the enemy and grab him, rips parts off for weapons or hold him like a meat shield. However the reason I am giving this a 3 is because I can't play past the second mission. There is a problem that according to their forums they appear to have known about since march 2017 (I am writing this in November 2017) and have not fixed. I contacted their tech support and it took 12 days for a reply which said I needed to contact Oculus (which I had already done). It's nearly been 12 days again and I still have not heard back from Epic games Tech support. It will be worth the purchase if the game works, but if it doesn't then you may be as screwed as I am because they appear to have no tech support for their game. That is definitely something I will consider if I ever choose to buy another game from them.

Bionic Commando (2009)8
Nov 1, 2017
This game is really pear shaped. For 3/4 of the game you are simply moving way point to way point with no real motivation to continue. You hit each waypoint just hoping for a glimpse of some story line, some excitement, or just something to care about, but it's kind of a snooze until the last quarter of the game where the music starts playing the old themes, you actually get to fight a real boss and enter a enemy stronghold, then it just ends... It ends with a lot question marks. If it wasn't for the last quarter of the game I'd give it a 7, but the last bit made me love the game enough to get past snoozing through the first 3/4 of it. The music is wonderful and incorporates the orginal themes which will really get you excited once they start playing. Combat is fun and fluid and incorporates guns and your grappling hook. Instead of discovering secret items to become stronger you complete challenges for more health, faster reload, more armor etc. There are collectables but I recommend skipping them your first play through as the game is slow enough at the beginning. The world you play in is gorgeous and sprawling both horizontally and vertically. The grappling mechanics are fluid and a lot of fun. You can jump of a building and dive to the bottom into a swing or crash into an enemy to kill them. Gravity doesn't hurt you, the only thing that will is water. The gameplay is really really good, it just lacks pacing and story. I bought this game bundled with bionic commando rearmed on sale for ~$5. I actually like "rearmed" better but if you love the series play them both because it's a cheap bundle that goes on sale often.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed10
Nov 1, 2017
The original Bionic Commando on the nes was one of my favorite games. "Rearmed" is a remake of the original game. They have updated a lot but they haven't strayed from what made the game so much fun. 1) All the graphics have been redone but all the set pieces are exactly where you remember them. 2) All the music has been re-scored with new music faithful to the original themes. 3) Some of the bosses have been completely revamped. If you will recall some of the bosses in the original game were ridiculously easy so this is a great improvement. They have done a great job recreating those boss fights in ways that incorporate your bionics. 4) Many of the weapons from the original game were replaced with more useful weapons. So instead of shooting straight up and down, it now ricochets at angles. This new gun fulfills the same purpose as the original but in a much more useful way. 5) They also updated some of the items from the original. For example, instead of a communications backpack you get a key card. This takes the game forward into the modern era. If you are looking to play it to remember your childhood this is a faithful update to the game. If you are looking to see whats new in the Bionic Commando games buy it bundled with the latest game.

DO NOT buy if you have AMD!!! It will crash and freeze at 60fps. There are no fixes for this even in 2017. No Joke the fixes online tell you to run windows 95 compatibility and lower your driver version to before you card was even manufactured. None of it works. This game is permabroken for AMD and Warner Brothers doesn't care to fix it. Buy it on Xbox or Playstation if you have an AMD. I could only play to chapter 2 because of the game breaking AMD bugs. However what I did get to play was a lot of fun. There are towns where you can pick up quests, but there are only a few people in each town so you never feel overwhelmed with tasks and dialogue when what you really want to do is get back to the action. There is a lot of loot and it drops plentifully but gives you the option to sell it remotely. There are set items you can combine and augmentation slots. There were not a lot of skills in totality, 4-5 I think, but there are 27 places to put skill points. Combat was fun and fluid (minus the stuttering from AMD). I played by myself but if I had a friend or brother to play with I'd probably give it a 8.5. For what I did play they nailed the feel of middle earth.

Transformers: Devastation9
Sep 23, 2017
I am blown away by this game. I loved the transformers as a kid and still have them in my attic. If you have ever seen Transformers the movie it's more like that then regular series. It's gritty and has the same type of heavy metal sound track as the movie. Vince Dicola wrote a full octane score for this and it fits because it is pedal down the whole way through. It's not a button masher, every deception has his own unique attacks and if you don't time your dodges and tactics you will lose...every time. The first chapter you fight freaking devastator, and each deception is developed like the deception they are. They didn't just slap on personality and build to a name, they brought the enemies to life. The trailer just doesn't give you a good impression of how this game feels as a fan. I'm telling you if you are a fan of the original series you will need a seat belt for you computer chair. Even if you have never watched the transformers I think you will like it for the intensity of combat. It's like Gran Turismo and street fight, if you aren't fighting your racing, taking 90degree turns at 90 miles an hour by "transforming" into a right turn. When you are fighting you are turning out combos, special moves and ultimates while making twitch based dodges that require you to dodge in the appropriate direction, then transforming into a car to speed away and close in for another attack. All while Vince Dicola is shredding a guitar in the back ground. It has difficulty settings if you need more or less of a challenge. It has rpg type stats to level up, it has loot that can be deconed and imbued, it has tech slots that enhance your character and all sorts of trivia files, sub challenges, combos to unlock, and collectables. It's also a full transformers episode in it's own right. There is already a DLC that will get you the Red Alert autobot but the standard game will still get you 5 autobots. I can't put it into words, it's just pure adrenaline and mountain dew. It's just really amazing, and I hope this becomes a regular thing for Activation and Vince Dicola as a way to release new Transformers episodes.

Tales of Zestiria8
Sep 18, 2017
First off this is a solid Tales game. If you are fan of the series it's a no brainier, stop reading and go buy it. The music is incredible however the best scores are sadly rare. The story line is deep and meaningful, it's complex but not hard to follow. The comedic skits are really well written. The combat is unique to the series because you have two characters that can basically fuse with 1 of 4 elemental seraphim. You can stay fused as long as you want, or quickly split and fuse with a different seraphim. It's a solid game within it's class, if you like the classic/Japanese style rpgs you will like this game as well. No bugs, no crashes, no frustrating systems. It does have a few minor issues such as the fact that there is no world map to travel, so you have to walk everywhere...section to section, or travel through save points at what I find to be a very punishing cost. The battle camera is on your back rather than angled like the other tales games and that makes it hard to see what your character is actually doing. The main reason that holds it back is the new equipment system. In this tales you fuse items. So you buy an azure blade, level up the proficiency then buy another azure blade and combine the two. Each blade has 4 random stats to consider when combining them. There are so many stats (50?) that could appear randomly that it's just pointless to even think about it. I just combined all like weapons and bought the next higher tier in the next town. In addition to that each of those 4 random stats would fill up parts of a 6x8? grid. By stacking vertically or horizontally in the grid you got different bonuses. I am just before the last boss and through luck alone I managed to get 1 entire vertical stack through my whole play through. I got it and one hour later my weapon was obsolete which broke the stack. It gets even more complex than that, there are these creatures you can slot on it for bonuses, but I think you only get to do it manually when you first find them. After that it appears you slot it to a region to increase the drop rate and rely on luck. Basically I just ignored that entire system and looked at the stats. If attack went up that is the weapon I used or fused. The system is just to punishing because of the grind needed and it gets out-scaled before you can meet the grind. Thankfully you can ignore the system entirely and beat the game. I'm playing it on difficult while ignoring the item fusion and beating things just fine. However this also means I won't be bothering to max out my characters before I finish the game, and that is something I have always looked forward too. So it loses perfection by trying something new with the item system, but like I say you can ignore it entirely and enjoy are really good tales game.
