Battle: Los Angeles10

At last a film which keeps it simple. A film in which the alien invaders do not succumb to computer viruses or how wonderfully together the world is. This film focuses on a small battle in a global conflict and stays there. The film critics as usual lack any intelligence or imagination to see this film is a small scale event with large scale implications in the war depicted. Thankfully the critics disliked it which helped me get it for rock bottom prices. Another own goal for the film industry courtesy of the film critics. The film industry would be better off banning critics from any screenings and allow the more savvy public to judge for themselves.

The Hunt for Red October2
Sep 27, 2011
More proof that Ebert is a hypocrite. I note unlike some films he has criticized, his moral centre seems rather off here. This film is a highly inaccurate account of the true story of Red October. That aside, look at what this film advocates, State theft of the property of another country. Hardly the actions of a whiter than white State and rather reminiscent of Firefox. More State stealing another State's secrets. If this was the theft of American property we would hear that this was the work of Satan or profound Evil. The acting was fine, the script was to much like US propaganda and little to do with telling a true story. K19 with Harrison Ford did this much better and was an infinitely superior film. This is dated Cold War rhetoric.

I found myself in agreement with Stephanie Zacharek of ****. I quite liked this movie and thought most of it was visually very beautiful. It is a film I would quite happily watch again and was a different look at the world of lycanthropes. It was also nice to see Agnes Bruckner and I thought she carried the film fairly well. There were some weak parts but on the whole that I think was more the fault of casting than script or directing. If you like fantasy, werewolves, then this will give you something new to howl about :)!

This is yet another example of why Americans should not remake foreign films. They messed up the 7 Samurai with "Tthe Magnificent Seven", turned the original Japanese Ring films into a mess losing the plot, then with this classic Russian film, tried condensing it into the usual "slot" on time and cut and paste all the meaning out of it. Please Amerian film makers. Leave foreign films alone so that people can see for example, this beautiful haunting Russian arthouse film rather than dross. To anyone who liked this American version, you should see the Russian version and the actress Natalia Bonderchuk is much better and far more convincing than Natasha McElhone.

Burn After Reading0

A film that is proof positive that if film critics like it, it has to be bad. This film goes back to the time when US comedy did not travel. Actually from brain to mouth is usually to far for most alleged comedy. Frances McDormand great actress but in this I could have quite cheerfully beaten her to death as I found her incredibly irritating all the way through. Brad Pitt. Terrible. As to George Clooney. This actor has only made two decent films that I can recall, The Peacemaker and One Fine Day. He was so so in Three Kings, appalling in the dismal US version of Solaris and this was not much better. If you want to see a good spy spoof then watch the infinitely better "Red" with Bruce Willis. This film should be renamed Burn Before Viewing. But as I said it should be thanked for proving how abysmal the film critics are. To those that liked it, I presume they were doing another sale at Lobotomies 'R us!

This film exemplifies just how pointless professional film critics are. As soon as I see a negative review by Roger Ebert I know I will really like the film. I concluded this is because firstly, I see the film, secondly I have an open-mind before seeing it and do not suffer from the crass "look at me" approach of most film critics. This film is a wonderful story really well told. A robot who through a fault, fate whatever aspires to be more than it is (a trait film critics could learn other than being failed writers). It is a film no matter how often I see it, never fails to leave me feeling entertained and fully engaged. It has the right mix of humour, story telling and a poignant ending which it only takes two brain cells to rub together to understand. Clearly to many film and television critics have nothing to rub together :). This was (1999) and is a rarity these days, a film which you can sit the whole family in front of, from toddlers to your 90 year old grandparents and know they will not need to reach for earmuffs, hide under the settee or pray for a rapid one way trip to the next life. I could not recommend this film highly enough for family entertainment. As JonR rightly says an emotional film, which at the end of the day is surely what the world of film is about, an emotional connection. Perhaps film critics need to learn this. Robin Williams excellent. One of his best roles. Embeth Davidtz also excellent. Sam Neil - also excellent. The rest of the cast were excellent to. Special FX to enhance, not dominate. Good pace and a decent length unlike the usual cheap 80 to 90 minute dross we normally get. Script is a good adaptation of Asimov who is one of my favourite authors. Having read the film reviews by so many supposedly professional critics, I must thank most of you for increasing my already deeply rooted levels of contempt for your "industry." An industry which seems to be one composed of literary hacks and failures and produce nothing but spite. If any of you had any balls you would create.

What on earth was Morgenstern watching or was it the fact he had to be different to the generally favourable reviews. This is a film which as a man made me uncomfortable because the character played by Law was such a complete ass. But then none of the characters are what one would call loveable. I think this movie would be ideal for someone who was trying to decide whether they wanted to enter the damage zone which relationships open everyone up too. Anyone who makes a claim that the film characters do not exist is really very deluded. Where do you think divorce, adultery and the other unpleasant forms of betrayal come from? Some of it was very funny. In these "girl power" times I would recommend it to men and women equally because in this movie neither gender comes out too well.

One of the finest science fiction films to ever hit the screen. It is most certainly in my top five. I think "Noop" needs to watch this again. "No essence." What are you on about?. Of course the essence was there and it was in the quite insipid form of discrimination based on a humans DNA which has already started to some degree and in the film relegates those without perfect DNA to the scrap heap and dead end jobs. It is not to hard to imagine the losses to human civilization if such discrimination had existed a hundred or so years ago. For example, Albert Einstein would have been on the scrap heap. Makes you think doesn't it. An excellent script with superb performances by the cast, particularly Jude Law. Again I find myself wishing I could push the scorer further to the right. 10 out of 10 does not give justice to this superb film.

A film that needs to be watch a couple of times and then it grows on you. Nice to see Brendan Frazer in something different, a magical fantasy. A nice family film and the girl playing the daughter, I think she will be seen a lot more by film goers and TV viewers in the future, Eliza Bennett. She also sings the closing credits song which she does very well. I cannot say much more without creating spoilers.

Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! Anyone who thinks differently clearly had their eyes shut or brain switched off. This is a family film with so much going for it. Magic, murder(s), comic mayhem, romance, fantasy, cross dressing pirates and some very good swordplay not to mention some very well done effects. Robert De Niro and Michele Pfeiffer were excellent as indeed was the whole cast, even that idiot Ricky Gervais (sorry can't stand the bloke) who thankfully had only a small part and suitable end. The sword fight at the end of the film is probably the finest sword fight I think I have ever seen in a film as well some of the best comedy fights which prospective viewers can find out for themselves. I only wish the score thing could move further to the right, because this film deserved it. To those who gave bad reviews, what can I say "losers" I think comes close.

The Golden Compass10
Aug 28, 2011
Amazing! Roger Ebert and I agree for a change. If a film inspires people to go out and read the books (His Dark Materials) then it is has done its job. I am currently reading the books again because thanks to a group of silly devolved organizations based in the USA, the rest of the story will not be made into film despite the Golden Compass doubling its money at the box office. There is always going to be the book versus the film arguments "oh, the film is not like the book." Perhaps people who say things like that should read a single chapter out loud and time themselves. When they figure out an average chapter will take around 10 - 15 minutes to read properly, then perhaps they will understand a scriptwriters job better. Yes, the film is not like the book, but it has taken the essence of the story and made the Golden Compass into something different from the usual film fare. I very much hope the cowardly filmmakers in Hollywood lift a suitable digit at the silly organizations attempting to censor what the masses can see and hear.

The Adjustment Bureau6
Aug 28, 2011
An enjoyable film but I thought it had been either over-edited or there was something missing. It was like some of the story threads had been left to dry and not explored. Shame, because instead of being a great film it was average which was a shame because the lead actors were fine, just a script which needed to be tweaked and tended too by the "Adjustment Bureau." With what seems like Hollywood's campaign to remake just about everything perhaps this fim will be remade better one day and explore the subject deeper.

Maybe it is because I am male but this film was just so dull and so long. I think it also justified my decision to stay happily single as they go on, and on, and on. ... This film had absolutely nothing going for it. The cast I am sorry but I do not find them attractive as women and I found myself feeling less so as the films went on. Normally I give films a second chance and watch them again, but for this particular film (as with the Royal Tenebaums and The Life Aquatic) I do not need to. Thankfully I bought this as a cheap DVD and plan to donate it to a library or someone who also will probably pass it on when they have seen it.

Joe Morgenstern what a joke. This film is cleverly put together and worth many viewings. It does something original for a romantic story, it shows a man telling his daughter about his dating history and gets his daughter to guess who is her mother. This all happens during the daughters visits to her father as like many real life families, the daughters parents are divorcing. Abigail Breslin as the daughter is excellent and so is the cast. The way the passage of years is depicted is well done. Some of it is very funny but it is not the run of the mill romantic comedy, it is romantic, it has comedy but most of all it is a well told story with a beginning, middle and, well that is for you to find out.

Bravo to Kevin Thomas. This film is great fun and what is even better was it was made so that no sequels would follow at a time when sequels seemed to be rolling off the shelf. Gary Oldman, Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich all clearly enjoyed working with Luc Besson along with Chris Rock who has to be commended for wearing those, umm outfits and hairstyles which alone were worth laughs. This is two hours of fun which is not to be taken seriously and is clearly meant to be family fun. Perhaps the other film critics who felt the need to moan at this creative fun should take their brain out of the fridge or maybe actually stop being tight and go and see the film they have written about. This is unlikely as that would actually mean film critics earning their salary!

I am not surprised Roger Ebert did not understand the story, it required he actually saw it and Roger do you actually have any functioning synapses? I know complexity to story is rather beyond some film goers these days, so buy it on DVD and watch it several times, it may sink in then. This film is an adapted video game and shows great creativity with more creature creations from Patrick Tatapoulos who with Stan Winston have probably created some of the best creatures seen in film. In essence it is a film about revenge on religious zealots who "kill" a child. The young actress who plays three parts I last saw playing a ghost in Kingdom Hospital and clearly has no problem playing highly variable roles from a sweet child to the manifestation of evil.. This film is hauntingl beautiful with great incidentatl music and the ending, well try it.

Outlander10

Ah Robert Ebert, if ever there was a man who has not got a clue it is this man. Robert you have no talent and I wonder how many years it has been since you actually went to see a film. Anyway Outlander, is a sci fi version of Beowulf. The creature effects are courtesy of the great Pat Tatopoulus and the Morwin is brilliant, innovative and superbly done. John Hurt, Jim Cazievel, Sophie Myles and Ron Perlman are all in gine form. This independent film deserves success and is a wonderful example of creativity. More please.

Sadly more rubbish inflicted on the public from Wes Anderson. This film is appalling, there are no redeeming qualities and I can only suggest if you wish to actually die of boredom, then watch this film. With the Royal Tennebaums it takes pride of place as being the joint worst film I have ever seen in my life.

Reminds me of the bad old days when American comedy exports were not funny they were just appalling. Anyone who found this nonsense funny really needs to get out and get a life. This film was utter dross from beginning to end and a total waste of Gene Hackman and the rest of the cast looked really bored all the way through. Wes Anderson has no sense of humour, no talent and should go back to commercials. The fact this film was put up for awards proves to me professional critics have not got a clue about the film industry and should go and get real jobs as they clearly have no talent as film critics, mainly because I doubt they even see the films they write about.

Day Watch10
Apr 3, 2011
Excellent entertaining film and if the critic from Miami has seen it, then I would be amazed as this film is nothing like the Matrix. The effects were a compliment to the film rather than the film, the humour in it was great fun especially where the main character is placed in a womans body. The underlying message from both **** and Daywatch is about choices and how people can make poor choices which is why the ending is quite poignant. I think the negativity is more due to being a foreign language film and not American, both to my mind being pluses these days.
