The OA

"The OA" is one of the most significant shows of the year simply because Marling and Batmanglij barrel through so many boundaries, stretch their combined imaginations so far and challenge the shopworn precepts of what is supposed to make an acceptable television series.

It’s earnest, self-serious, steeped in spiritual mythology and sci-fi-ish notions about time-jumping and dimension hopping, and heavily focused on the sort of puzzle-solving mystery that lights up Reddit message boards. While watching, I was entranced at times. At others, I thought I was watching the most ridiculous show on TV. Occasionally, I felt both of these feelings simultaneously.

A compellingly strange, eight-episode psychological thriller that the streaming service has more or less dropped on us without much advance notice.

Whether her story is real or the byproduct of extreme trauma is one of many questions at the heart of this haunting, graceful and often frustratingly cryptic series.

I have to give Marling and Batmanglij credit: I don’t usually have much patience for humorless, convoluted hooey like this, but their narrative pacing, and some of the performances ... are enthusiastically committed and effective.

It is, on some level, more than enough that "The OA" tries so hard and with such sincerity. "The OA" is fascinating and adventurous, both with formal limitations like episode runtime and narrative experimentation. ... But "The OA" is offering a story that cannot be thought about too deeply without falling quickly to pieces.

It’s weird, and slow, teasing and teasing its way to a payoff that is meant to seem profound and instead plays as utterly ludicrous and at times borders on offensive.

this is the BEST show of all time. ive had two babies & spent tons of time pregnant & breastfeeding watching shows, & this one is truly one of the best. watch & rewatch. absolutely still cannot believe it was cancelled. if anyone is interested, all of Brit Marling’s movies are amazing as well.

So slow and dry! Even though it did manage to keep my interest, when I found out, much to my surprise, that a second season had come out, I couldn't bring myself to watch it, because I just couldn't imagine it would pay off. The reviewer who points out that all these 10/10 reviews are fake is completely correct. Go look. They were all in the same 2 month span and didn't review anything else!

The OA : Qu’est-ce que c’est que ce truc… l’horoscope de Télé7jours en série télé ? du paranormal de pacotille (pléonasme) bricolé à la va-vite, une sorte de vague ésotérisme à deux balles extrêmement gnangnan, concon et cucul. Avec bien sûr de l’eau de rose et de la guimauve en solde, en veux-tu, en voilà…! Et quelle lenteur pour dérouler cette pseudo intrigue à tiroirs… difficile de garder l’oeil ouvert dans ces conditions, d’autant que ça ne tient pas debout (évidemment) et que ça multiplie les invraisemblances à un point assez… inimaginable, quand bien même ça part dans tous les sens dans l’au-delà du delà et aller-retour… La blonde n’est pas terrible et joue mal… elle a l’air bête. Les autres comédiens et comédiennes aussi ont l’air bête. En fait, tout le monde a l’air con là-dedans, c’est fou. N’importe quoi de A à Z, cette série de merde, franchement ! mais pour dormir à poings fermés, c’est plutôt pas mal.

Confusing and disorganized story. Hard to follow plot. Total waste of time.
