Northeast’s performance, which emanates joy and a guileless sensuality, deserves to be as much of a launchpad to stardom. The six-part miniseries, which was released last month, is no less a discovery—the hidden gem of the summer, if not the year.

Far better than the overly rote and tired “Bridgerton.” The key difference is it features an earthier, more developed female presence at its core — the fiery and unsinkable 17-year-old Syblla Melvyn (Philippa Northeast in an incomparable performance that gives us a writer heroine to cheer on).

Loved watching it! Light, funny and entertaining, with a beautiful glimpse into Australian society around 1900. I especially enjoyed seeing the struggles and expectations women faced at the time — and how surprisingly much of it still resonates today. A charming film with humour, strong characters and a thought-provoking message about women, independence and choosing your own path.

In 1979, I reviewed the original movie starring Judy Davis and much of that still works:“Turn of the Century Australia finds our young author (Philippa Northeast) struggling with her farm family, while she dreams of greater things…a life in the arts. She spends a few months in country society and captures a handsome man’s heart. This gentle story of an early free-thinking female is beautifully rendered, a delight to the eye and heart.”Northeast gamely embodies the character’s spunky appeal. There are several subplots that with enjoyable characters that add to the richness. This feels a bit more like a Jane Austen version of the story with the “will she or won’t she” romantic entanglements and a touch of **** in the struggling poverty angle, but this version is still a charmer.

The new series, created by Australian writer/producer Liz Doran, has a peppier, less ambiguous feel — less tone poem than modernized fable, filtered through the ongoing yen for Jane Austen love triangles and marriage plots (Netflix is actually launching a new “Pride and Prejudice” series later this fall). It’s a lot of fun.

My Brilliant Career is a fun series that’s made very watchable by Philippa’s Northeast’s lead performance. At times, it tries to get a bit too stylish, but those moments are outweighed by the story and performances.

There are many people to credit for this buoyant “Brilliant Career,” including its developer and co-writer Liz Doran. But it is Philippa Northeast as Sybylla who is the shiny thing from which we cannot avert our eyes. Viewers will experience an almost chemical reaction in watching the performance.

The supporting cast are all pretty good, though nobody brings much gravitas so fun lines (such as “I think no man should have to defend anything he says after midnight”) don’t tend to land with much force. Though that’s not the case with Northeast: she’s a delight.

Abandoned after 2 episodes. The main actress didn't convince me at all and failed to make me appreciate either the story or the settings.
