In “Fargo,” Thornton’s character was pure evil, but in Goliath he's just flawed--despicable at times, but with a good heart that shows often as he pursues justice against his old law firm and partner. This one’s quite bingeworthy.

The show has the kind of jaunty professionalism of a John Grisham novel, in which an outmatched lawyer takes on a, yes, goliath, and usually wins at great personal expense.

Revised upwards after season 3. Given the comments here about s3 id take it many people aren't into actually innovative episodes for TV shows , or Arthouse, or David Lynch , or anything actually cool really. Season 3 is an absolute gem. Quaid, Bridges , legendary mash up with Billy Bob. The streaming / tv show bizz needs much more of this , and things like Peaks 3 and true detective 1. More of this and less woke please.

I watched the 1st and 2nd season and have yet to watch the 3rd as of this review: This series is a blend of a lot of other tv dramas and to be short it's over-hyped on Amazon, I will begin with some of my problems with the 1st season, so whoever did the camera work,to be fair it could be the directors fault maybe editing etc, so in a few scenes in the show the camera does a sort of pan thing with a little shake, when 2 people are having a regular conversation and I feel the situation would have been called for if they were fighting or if it were necessary to convey movement or action, but that is clearly not the case when the scene I'm thinking of has 2 people standing on an outdoor building balcony smoking lol, you pretty much give the viewer no time to learn or explore the situation of the characters or what the actors are trying to convey, and because of this awkward moving cam it makes it hard to understand what we are looking at this issue eventually tapers off later into the series or it's used more sparingly another issue is Donald Cooperman the main bad guy in the show and Billy McBride are rivals and they play there parts well maybe one of the best things in the show, but I would have liked to see more time and development on the both of them in a longer flashback it would help, maybe play it throughout the show, they did have 1 or 2 short flashbacks, but they leave you wondering about a few things, another key issue is the show tends to get boring there are a few moments where the show feels like anime filler, now onto season 2 the biggest issue is it has a law case in it somewhere i think, but it gets forgotten quite quickly, and they decide to make it into a suspense/mystery/drama/creep show, some new characters are introduced and they decide to not tell us anymore about Billy McBride's past, and instead divulge all the info of these new characters lives and in the process add more filler and we are supposed to care because they will leave no impact in the end anyway season 2 was not that much better it had moments that showcased billy bobs potential as an actor, but he needs better actors to compete with and the story needs better antagonists to counter him, season 1 had this but they did not go into details enough to make it worth watching it, and I have yet to watch season 3 so I might do a followup review. Update: i have finished watching season 3... it tied up a lot of the loose ends of season 2 I will admit Denis Quaid made for a good antagonist for Billy Bob to act off of in an alternate reality the 2 actors would likely be both battle in the octagon, it is a sight to see anytime both of them are on screen they seem to speak a similar language, and some old characters return from the last 2 seasons I won't divulge who, but after viewing all 3 seasons I must say it is getting better quality wise, season 3 had a lot of moments that I wish were not like a drug trip, some of them made me laugh others were just annoying watching it was what I would think a drug trip would be like, if you watch it you will know what I mean, because the plot also seems to get hazy, a 4th season was rumored to be in the works so I will update if it ever is released.

This L.A crime story is satisfying in its confident approach to a familiar genre. The bonus here is its broad streak of offbeat humor om Nilly's laid-back cunning, which contrasts nicely with the brash impatience of his sidekick, Patty. [11 - 24 Jun 2018, p.13]

There’s nothing radical or particularly groundbreaking about it. If anything, it is conventional in an almost self-conscious way. ... But what truly elevates Goliath are the performances by Thornton and Arianda.

With the exception of some added F-bombs, Goliath plays like a reasonably decent prime-time legal mystery circa 1998, not a modern drama revelation.

As the story unspools, the part of it in which McBride figures continues to be entertaining, in a been-there-done-that kind of way. ... But then there’s the other half of the show’s odd bordering-on-bizarre split personality. ... Suddenly we’re in an arch, slick, hyped-up TV legal show, with lawyers marching in formation and exchanging withering put-downs.

Even great casts have their limits, and in the case of Goliath, they give this shaggy drama just enough electricity to keep interest without offering a genuine reason to care about what’s going on episode to episode.

Season 1: Well this show got on my nerves. The premise is interesting but the execution awful. Instead of showing that the problems faced by the main protagonist are systemic and that deep reform of both the political and justice system are needed, the show spends most of its time on the anecdotal aspects of the main protagonist's case. Also, WAY too much time is spent showing the (very irritating) quirks and relations of a bunch of sociopathic lawyers working for a bunch of psychopathic arms manufacturers. Writers and producers have a duty to not get sidetracked when describing a story like this. This may be a work of fiction but it is based on reality and as such it should not avoid diving as deep as possible. Alas, the opposite is done here and what we are left with is pretty shallow. On the plus side, great acting (but mostly wasted on cowardly and criminally insane characters...).
