It commits the cardinal sin of being an unfunny comedy. There was potential with the plot (a captain who's so oblivious and useless that he's unaware that his ship is a front for an international crime syndicate/evil supervillain) but the execution is let down by having jokes that would only appeal to a 14 year old boy. It's all unfunny sex jokes and violence related jokes. You'll know within the first episode if this is a show for you. Trust me in that it doesn't change much after that first episode.
This show is really unfunny. There are long runners to obvious jokes that aren't even moving the plot. It is really aimed at 12 year olds who think a punch line is someone gets a gruesome death. Some apologists are referring it to "anti-comedy" but it really isn't that. It is just bad.
When I was first introduced to this show, it gave me the impression that it was inspired by Archer in some way. It just had similar vibes from a distance. So I had high hopes going into it. But within just a few min of the first episode I knew it wasn't going to be anywhere near as good. The comedy is so shallow and crass and most of all horribly structured. I get the vibe that the show really thinks it's funny and that it just keeps hitting and hitting. However, in reality my eyes are about to roll out of my head just a few minutes in. Every joke is the most obviously ridiculous thing someone could think of and absolutely none of it is clever. The 1 dimensional nature of the jokes gives the audience nothing to realize or be surprised by. And some of them seem to drag on way longer than they even needed to. I felt like I got what the punchline was before they even started telling the joke. The animation is ugly. Most of the characters look fine, tbf. But there are several characters that are just so hard to look at. Mostly, the character designers don't know how to design older women. Take a look at Mallorie Archer and compare it to Captain Fall's mother and tell me Ms. Archer isn't better designed. The actual motion is fine as far as that part of the animation goes. So mostly my critique here is with character design. The plot is a waste. It is probably the only redeemable feature of this series. It could have worked really well IMO, if it was given to people who actually know how to write a comedy series. But I can't even sit through the entire first season to see if the entire thing is cohesive. Because who cares if the plot is good if I'm constantly fed these horrible jokes. I wish I had more positive things to say, but all I can say is I don't recommend this show to anyone.
