Wonka

The film is charming and warm-hearted, much like Paddington and its sequel, and the onscreen delight is infectious.

Wonka is, in fact, a lively, winsome pleasure, a film decidedly aimed at children that nonetheless incorporates some dark matter.

It's as enthusiastic yet inscrutable as Wonka himself, played with an elegantly withholding quality by Chalamet, who in moments of quiet contemplation and madcap inspiration could be Gene Wilder's long-lost grandchild.

Wonka’s throwback charms make a striking enough impression, especially with Chalamet in the role, that the idea of another musical Wonka adventure isn't at all objectionable. If, that is, they skip the fat suit next time.

This is an eminently pleasant movie, propped up by its indefatigable good cheer and King’s immaculately tidy craftsmanship.

The movie is overly busy, as these kinds of eager-to-please diversions tend to be, and at two hours it overstays its welcome.

Young audiences may well be enchanted, but I’m sad to report I found the whole confection sickly sweet and hopelessly twee.

This movie was AMAZING!!! I love this movie, the soundtrack is still amazing even in 2025, Warner Bros. Give yourself a pat on the back because this is better then any Disney musical, or any musical in general, 10/10!!!

Pretty good movie, we may need a bit more of magic and fantasy but still a very good movie to watch for a recollection of the others stories around Wonka.

If we had to sum it up, Wonka is a Christmas film that takes us into the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with a rather muted tone. Nothing too concerning, though the show, led by Timothée Chalamet, delivers a sharp and enjoyable musical, even if it’s a bit lacking in songs.

Chalamet isn't really an actor, he's more like a model who can deliver a few lines. I can almost see his paycheck in the reflection of his eyes, during close-ups. Compare what Brando, Rourke, Nicholson, Deniro, Pacino, Hopper, etc, had achieved by the age of 27. World's apart. Paul King's two Paddington films were excellent, so this film is a real let down. Trying to bash out a children's story like Roald Dahl clearly wasn't achievable. The musical scenes are cringe, and there's so much autotune and compression on the vocals, they may as well have been done by AI. The only engaging scenes are when Hugh Grant shows up. Wonka was made at the height of woke, so the remaining supporting cast speaks for itself. Overall, it feels like a film made by corporate committee.

Sickeningly sweet, shovelhouse niceity. A couple laughs (admittedly) towards the beginning, quickly becomes a grinding, by the numbers, artificial cgi confection. I was deciding whether to fall asleep or walk out. The actor who played Wonka did their best, but even they couldn’t save the film from forgettable, novelty, nostalgia bait.
