Super

The libido and bloodlust flowing from the pint-size Page is the funniest thing in the movie, but elsewhere, the mix of the goofy and ghastly is hard to digest.

It's really a one-joke movie, but the joke is a good one.

Wilson does amusingly steely work, while Page goes bonkers, giving her gleeful nut job one of the more memorable horselaughs in recent American film history.

Take "Kick-Ass." Strip it of most of its wit and charm, amp up the violence, the sadism. Make it more crude and coarse and gory. And what you're left with is Super.

Wilson is basically playing an even more feckless version of his "Office" character, Dwight, another intense and self-deluded doofus. It's a character that works better in smaller doses.

Where Gunn's last feature "Slither" was an enjoyably icky, funny riff on schlocky horror tropes, the split-personality Super merely repels with half-baked ideas, Wilson's and Page's scorched-earth overacting and atonal bursts of jokey gore.

Skip this one, even if your hipster significant other whines a blue streak.

One of the best R-rated superhero movies ever! It was brilliant! I believe it was much better than Kickass. I loved it!

There's a lot more heart in this movie than I originally expected. Wilson does a great job as the lead and Gunn, as always, continues to kill it as a writer/director. It's not necessarily a perfect film (I thought there could have been a bit more character building, there's a severe lack of Kevin Bacon) but it was an enjoyable one.

I really liked the movie but there are a lot of problems in the cinematography that really annoyed me through the whole film, in other they were perfectly done but it was hard to remove the bad taste from the bad ones.

No matter what you expect of Super, you're wrong. Every ten minutes, like clockwork, it shifts gears and bucks the audience into the dust. It truly defies categorization, taking delight in confusing its viewers. Comparisons to Kick-Ass are undeniable, with the nerdy DIY superhero learning the world's a pretty dirty place after dark, but Super also manages to be as gratuitously gory and steadily off-color as a classic Troma film. Its awkward timing and confounding sense of humor, though, make comparisons to both less apt. By the climactic, explosion-filled finale, its transgressions from goofball comedy to creepy drama left my stunned theater debating whether to laugh or cry. An intensely uncomfortable experience you'll either love or hate. I lean, hard, to the latter.

I don't usually hate on an universal acclaim user score, but when I do, I do it for reasons. Super, on the other hand, has very great animation sequences and that can't save the film from being an instant mess. A dumbed-down mature Kick-Ass which that movie is obviously better.
