This buoyant, giddy comedy of catastrophe is the funniest film of the year so far, possibly the most amusing mainstream live-action comedy since "There's Something About Mary."

Entertainment Weekly
It's a bouncy, loose limbed, ''families do the darnedest things'' sitcom that elicits ungrudging laughs.

This is one of Ben Stiller's best movies. It remains consistently funny throughout and there are great performances from all of the actors. It is a lot of fun when everything goes wrong.

The best passive comedy. There is something deeply comforting about this film. It’s not a comedy that attacks you right away; instead, it slowly settles in. It doesn’t need to exaggerate to work, because there is complete confidence in the characters and in the situations surrounding them. Ben Stiller proves why he is one of the best actors working in cinema. He has a particular kind of charisma, a presence that carries weight even when he’s not on screen. Funny and human. I never get tired of watching him—if anything, I want him to be on screen all the time. Something similar happens with Teri Polo. Together, they work with enviable naturalness. There’s a real sense of balance: neither eclipses the other. And considering that the film clearly revolves around Stiller’s character, that’s no small achievement. De Niro does his job and functions within the machinery of the film, but he’s not the reason this movie excites me. The screenplay is another of its great strengths. The humor leans on the physical and the everyday, consciously avoiding any drift into surrealism. Everything flows organically. Interestingly, it’s also one of the most “serious” comedies I’ve seen. I really value how perfectly balanced it is: the humor never tips into parody, the drama appears just enough to avoid unnecessary sadness, and the romance is developed without turning into a pedantic novel. By the end, I’m left with a very good feeling. The sense of having watched a genuinely great film—solid, simple, intelligent, and full of personality. It leaves me eager, and optimistic, about watching the sequel. And for a film like this, that’s saying a lot.

Distress of Parents is a real pleasure.

Directed by Jay Roach, who made the "Austin Powers" movies and here shows he can dial down from farce into a comedy of (bad) manners. His movie is funnier because it never tries too hard.

It has just enough "comedy" to qualify as crowd-pleaser.

A funny and sometimes substantial movie that in real life would never have a happy ending.

Never before have two such skilled actors been so monstrously squandered in a movie so replete with failed gags and pathetic gaffs.

Meet the Parents is the kind of Hollywood Comedy that Hollywood WISHES it could make today. First off, almost 18 years later, it's still hysterical. The performances are really, really good, and the story and characters are so real and memorable. If you are looking for a good comedy, check this out!!!

Meet the Parents is a great comedy for anyone to watch. its very family friendly, perfect amount of humor, and somewhat reminds me of what will happen when I bring home my fiancee for the first time. This movie will definitely make you want to watch the second movie and the acting is pretty great. Since this was the first movie in the series, this particular one is the best one. If you want a good laugh, this is the movie for you.

The stagnant machinery of a weekend nightmare: A 3.0-star vivid but stressful drift through social anxiety.2004(3.0)I watched "Meet the Parents" in 2004, and it remains a functional 3.0-star record in my archive—a vivid exploration of the raw friction between a nervous groom and a suspicious father-in-law. This experience **** the fourth wall of the stagnant romantic comedy by infusing Robert De Niro’s sensational intimidation with a high-tension energy that felt 100% pathetic and frantic. While the production attempted a rebellious take on family introductions, the narrative rhythm felt too stagnant, dragging through a pathetic cycle of misunderstandings and cat-related disasters that lacked the chewy intellectual resolution of my higher-tier records. Seeing Ben Stiller’s vivid but pathetic struggle to gain approval provided a rhythmic sense of irony, but the emotional payoff felt too stagnant, leaving me in a state of silent frustration at the unrelenting awkwardness. The 95% preservation of my memory is dominated by the rhythmic, raw tension of the lie detector test and the vivid but stagnant paranoia of the Byrnes household, creating a journey that felt more like a pathetic endurance test than a sensational cinematic scar. Unlike the vivid soul of "I Love You Phillip Morris" or the raw brilliance of "Hot Fuzz," this encounter possessed a rhythm that was far too stagnant to escape its own cringe-inducing formula. It stands in my 2004 record as a vivid exercise in situational discomfort—a 3.0-star artifact of rhythmic unevenness that remained too stagnant to reach the sensational heights of my most cherished psychological archives.

As per the title, it's all about family. We've all been here. Meet the Parents is meant to be relatable and we love it that way. It's really, really funny.

An overall decent movie, even though I can really not stand some of the actors. Best parts of the movie obviously involve DeNiro, whose non-verbal performance and facial expressions make the movie worth watching.
