Final Analysis is a crackling good psychological melodrama [from a screen story by Robert Berger and Wesley Strick] in which star power and slick surfaces are used to potent advantage. Tantalizing double-crosses mount right up to the eerie final scene.

Final Analysis is the kind of movie that's a lot more fun to look at than to think about. Maybe that's the point.

Final is a bad-line hoot-a-rama. Gere after aiding an Hispanic criminal: ''If Pepe is safe, then we are all safe.'' Basinger on her marriage: ''We share an apartment - emphasis on apart.'' But every joke needs a punchline. Alas, the finale of Final Analysis - the worst case of Vertigo sickness since Mel Brooks' High Anxiety - is just punch-drunk. [7 Feb 1992, p.5D]

Final Analysis does go beyond the expected in homage to its San Francisco-based, ''Vertigo''-inspired setting. But it fails to do so in any organic way. It`s almost as if the movie were split into two parts: silly characters and tricky plot.

That most essential element in a thriller, the suspense, collapses mid-film, making it hard to care about the eventual denouement.

The plot twists and turns on itself endlessly and incriminates everyone. It's as if the filmmakers are trying to incorporate all the plot details from all the classics they so obviously love. But love isn't enough either. You gotta have brains, baby, and a heart and soul would be nice.

Insanely ridiculous.

Final Analysis has a first rate cast, mystery, brilliant twists plus many original visuals that you won't see in any another American movie from the 90's, B+. This is one of Gere's most fun and unique roles.

Now for the most part they both stared in No Mercy which I have not seen but Final Analysis is the one I've seen. This is actually going to be like Vertigo which I didn't know but it gets old quickly. Richard Gere plays Issac Barr, a doctor psychiatrist who helps Heather's sister, Diana who is having nightmares in the past about frightening and horrific childhood memories about his father. Heather is married to Jimmy Evans who is a violent and wealthy Greek gangster and she's suffering from pathological intoxication. Now this is where I go from here. Final Analysis is an Alfred **** unfocused neo-noir psychological thriller with unfocused performences, the courtroom scenes are kind of rushed and a dull story that rips off Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. I actually don't mind myself analysing a flower shaped like a ****. Aside from that, it's not much. It has it's moments but the film itself is dull but it was all right.
