game is to hard and unforgiving for how goofy it is. it feels like there no point risking your cats on hour long runs for nothing there's nothing in place to help out on runs that turn bad as you might as well just kill your self then waste a hour slogging through a unfun run just to die at a dumb ass boss fight that can get 50 moves over and over. its just not worth the time or effort

what a great game. the style is very well done and consistant - i did skip a lot of the text but some was enjoyable. the gameplays really fun - i was honestly having more fun with the cat making concept i thought it was well paced and well designed. Biggest cons of the game: house building was kinda annoying, ngl the absolute worst part of this game is finishing a run - and ur whole inventory holding was shuffled around with the like 20-30 items u get on a run. also no rarity on items is annoying. the rng aspect is kinda annoying but im not that bad its the part that makes it unique - the "1 cat 1 run" makes it a little sad too - u get the perfect cat and level ups but it really doesnt matter - this to me makes the game a lil harder to enjoy. also classes are objectively unbalanced - i cant believe or know why the mage even exists when the archer does what they can do 200x better. i was extremely suprised though that charms and status effects work on bosses, some boss battles are completely trizialized by some really low level skills which is suprising. I wish there was a harder mode - the most fun run i had in this entire game was a 1 cat archer run, i sav scummed and reset about 200 times to beat the throbbing king - i had like 5 negative quest items involving the gun that kills all team mates, the smiley face on the other cat, i loved it - felt like fe3h levels of difficulty where its turn based - u need to make the Chess best move every single turn for like 30+ turns thinking creative and getting a little lucky i wish there was more of that challenge but now that I have 40+ cats with 7 all stats, and 10+ positive mutations, i can literally play 5x speed and do each battle in 30 seconds no thoughts on hard mode. The inventory system really isnt fun tho - i have 50 things to pick from - finite slots, all for a run that i know is going to be so easy theres no point of even equiping anything - but i know ill be getting like 30+ items that run and itll scramble my inventory. Also pressing r on the map resets the whole thing - thats super annoying ngl. DESPITE ALL THESE CONS - its still a 9/10

It’s fine but the runs take too long and the upgrade system is not really fun or rewarding. I’ll come back after patches maybe.

I don't really understand what the hype is TBH. This is, more or less, exactly the game I'd always wanted to play. A true roguelike turn based tactics game with items and abilities and stats that change every run. Except... they don't really change every run. One in every 3 or 4 runs ONE of my characters will get an interesting combination of abilities or items that makes them do something that I think "oh that's cool." The rest of the time... it's just bare-bones tactics gameplay and random events that are either "your character is now super good for no reason" or "your character is basically dead now for no reason". Art and humor are pretty rough too, at least in BoI there was some sort of psychological element going on, I don't really understand what the theme is supposed to be based on in this.

Incredible game, the gameplay is so engaging that my boss caught me playing this game several times during my workday. It is a genius design that the main character (kitties) played by players is also the most important resource in this game, you must admit Edmund is so good at this. The "out of combat" system is kinda like Fallout Shelter, and it is a little creepy when you realized that the way how player treat these "cutie" cats happened in human history Over all, totally worth buying if you are into Tactical Roguelike games, and the music is amazing too

What. A. Game. I see so many people complaining about the game being too unfair or being too RNG heavy. And... That's the beauty of it. The game keeps you on your toes. You cannot steamroll an adventure unless you picked the right choices and luck was on your side. But those are pretty boring in my opinion. But what a feeling when you decided to go with low stats cats and no items because this run was just supposed to be about coins. And.... And... One passive ability that somehow is just perfect with a random collarless cat active ability and you have a run. 2h later you beat a major chapter of the game and you go to bed with an eager smile dreaming about tiles until the alarm goes off. The "out of combat" game is sure messy at first but so rewarding. There is no true "meta". I focused only on combat until the end of act 2 and I did just fine. Once again the game tells you "you did well but that's not enough, keep guessing my friend" Now you have to breed more consciously, find mutations, afford to send cats to the graveyard, etc. This game is about GRIND, the house game might feel overwhelming at first, but it just compliments everything you have thought about during the adventure. Trust the process, choices are choices you don't have to play a certain way to progress. I don't even know how Edmund and Tyler have made a game so balanced and yet so unpredictable. That's just chaos written as poetry, everything makes sense if you give it a chance. 50h in and I'm still discovering stuff and my moves are so far from perfect but I'm no speedrunner for sure. I feel like whoever you are, you'll find a way to be good at this game. Details aren't for show, being OP or unlucky aren't really a thing. Trust your guts, THINK, and it will compliment you. One word to describe this masterpiece : MECHANICS. Everchanging, surprising, never boring. Your way of playing will be the way to "finish" it. It's still early but I can't wait to see some random people finding incredible exploits to break runs. As a big fan of Isaac, I thought : "Edmund cannot surpass that". Well he and Tyler did. Cheers.

Simply peak, I love how they use the rouge like genre this way, it reminds me of balatro and it's difference in run, I love how funny it is and over everything how many hours does the game has.

A lot of cons for me for a game that draws all those high scores: - The roguelite natura makes it a chorer to play during the first hours, until you start getting REALLY interesting combinations of powers and power ups. It feels like having to grind to get the fun. - The turn based combat gets old and repetitive pretty quickly (even though the game offers hundreds of variations of powers, they are all simple disguises for concepts that are old and classic). I have played tons of games that did the same (or better) before, I fail to identify what's new or catchy here. - Art direction has a lot of perosnality, but it gets dull after some time. The limited color palette didn't resonate in me. - The base of the game is about the disposal of your character, why should I care for them? The rest of the characters involved are uninteresting even if they are as excentric as they can be. - Music was getting on my nerves after some time, practically all the themes share the same vibe and pace. Overall, music tries to be too protagonist when it should be more in the background. All in all, a very well crafted game, flawless in execution, but offers nothing new or susbtantially creative to deserve the scores it is receiving.

Game is super fun, combat is so creative thanks to how many ways there are to use all the classes, skills, items and map interactions all combined. Runs are quite long and can be a bit repetitive (or frustrating when RNG totally ruins a run - especially those with quest items). The mood of the game is very funny and relaxied, but the cat management and breeding between runs can be annoying sometimes.

It doesn't show anything new for the genre itself, it was fun for a few hours but after seeing that most of my runs were basically the same ı quicly got bored out of it, as ı am not really a fun of roguelike games **** cat breeding part was nothing like ı expected, it stays too shallow and random, it wasn't something ı was excited to do let's say. It also has the worst part of any roguelike game ı play, ''RNG'' for no goddamn reason, just to make the game longer.I want my skills and strategy to be put on a test not my luck.I don't want to wait for the right cat and items, or having to work for that to happen, because it is simply not fun. I am not here to gamble, this is a turn-based **** is cute though.

Writing this at 25 hours played and 25% completed. I think I will be on and off with this game for a long time. It can be the most fun ever or the biggest waste **** night also. The cat management can get frustrating as can some RNG in the runs. But when it comes together it is awesome.

I have spent over 60 hours in this game so far and am still continually finding features, items, and mechanics that I haven't seen yet. The skills you bring as a player to deftly work through a massively wide range of RNG has a significant effect on your ability to roll with the punches and make it through runs. Noticing small features of the map, or item and ability synergies, or taking advantage of quirks enemies have, even down to changing gear between different event types to maximize your chance at victory are not only rewarded, they're flat out required in some runs. It's pretty clear that this game spoon feeds you tidbits of gameplay during the introduction and that there is a massive skill ceiling that only playing the game repeatedly for hours upon hours will truly hone. Like the difficulty in Isaac and Elden Ring, this is a truly difficult game that rewards natural tacticians and spending the time to learn the game through trial and error. It is absolutely fantastic and deserves the widest audience it can get. If it were multiplayer or coop in some way I would need an intervention to be pulled away from it. Amazing game. I also want to credit the writing, story, and soundtrack as they're all superb as well. The writing and story definitely improve as you get deeper into the game, so a cursory or shallow dive in might not leave you with the same impression. The breeding part of the game is quite challenging, and I liken it to the challenges of beating the truly difficult characters in Isaac or bosses in Elden Ring. It's not something you can casually accomplish as it requires real thought and meaningful actions to get you going where you want to go. It also requires time spent in the game to unlock facets and understand what kinds of effects actions have. The real pull is doing adventure runs and if you want to get better at them you need to spend time and effort learning how to make your cats stronger, while also implementing the things you've learned in a meaningful way. I don't know this for certain, but I suspect even the types of cats you raise are different per save file - a sort of RNG at a macro scale that has an effect on everything you do on that particular save file. If that's true, then your stacking RNG cats on top of RNG adventures... all mixed in with thousands of items, abilities, and tactical situations to make decisions in. Staggering variety if you think about it. I'm excited to see where it goes from here and hope it only continues to get better with updates, acclaim, and DLC.

I think people still don’t understand how difficult it is for a roguelite to create a different story for you in every run you play. I remember when I had the option to return home or go further in my adventure. When I chose to continue, one of my cats had a crisis where he missed home and how everything used to be easier before—then he died… And after that, my entire team died except for one. A philosophical lesson that is probably completely intentional in an “RNG” run.

It's just okay, 5/10 at best. It's HORRIBLY balanced, and I do mean horribly. It doesn't add anything new to the roguelite genre or the tactics genre as a whole, just kind of more of the same with a 'binding of isaac mixed with cats' aesthetic. Each new run feels pretty much the same as the previous run, I was already pretty bored with doing Alley runs by the time the Desert became available. The cat's stats really don't matter much at all so the only real reason to breed is for favorable mutations/abilities. The entire breeding/housing system is horrendous and you have almost zero item storage until you grind out hundreds of runs to have enough cats to throw away to upgrade your storage. It's all so tedious it makes you dread even winning a run because you know your reward is just going home to throw away 70% of the items you found in the run and hoping your next team of cats spawns with good abilities. Not enough dopamine in this video game.

There is so much to this game that I don't believe people who rate it less than a 7 have seriously tried playing it. The music is great and there are so many superb music tracks that you only get to listen to after a while of playing, the graphics are fun and the humor is questionable, but still charming somehow. The gameplay of this game feels so nice and polished, it's hard to describe. It feels horrible if your cats die during a run and that makes it special. There are all kinds of emotions you experience while playing this game. It has endless replayability and most importantly, it's a whole lot of fun!

Very good game, man everything McMillen makes i have enjoyed to varying degrees. But this is by far may favorite, its addicting to play and there is so much to do, its just really fun. Man early Goty contender, gotta love it. (And yes humor is subjective and some might not vibe with that. But even when the gross out stuff or humor that doesnt necessarily hit with me happens i can overlook it because the game itself is just so much fun)

A true love letter to both the rouge lite and tactical rpg genre. One of the best game soundtracks ever created, along with a game density that rivals The binding of Isaac. As far as merit, this game has the greatest shot at game of the year.

Edit: I've seen just two kinds of criticisms 1) 'it's not balanced' - it is, it is just hard and to create diversity in runs, there is RNG, but decisions matter way more, to bring out synergy in ever-changing challenges 2) 'it's unethical' - yeah, sometimes games represent fiction; e.g., if the thought of giving your used cat to what is most likely a psychopathic zoophile in a videogame feels unbearable, the game is probably not for you My take: You build a base. You go through rogue-like runs in a challenging tactical setting. You discover amazing synergies, encounters, mutations that keep you hooked, fascinated and I caught myself saying 'Wow', 'Damn', 'so cool, that this works like that' many times. The start isn't that difficult, so it's quite accessible. And it ramps up to the point where pretty much everyone will feel the mental exercise between optimizing home and optimzing grid-control. Now add bizarre humor and feline torture - and you are good to go.

A game where breeding cats and goingon DnD like adventures is a very odd but unique concept. This game has grabbed my attention and with its seemingly endless amount of content I think the replay value alone makes it worth it. The gameplay is complex and addictive, I keep coming back for more. The humor is definitely not for everyone, but I do quite enjoy it. This game is an easy 10 for me.

Greate roguelike game, critics rated this game 10/10 kinda suspiciousbut overall is a great game, but if you have the visuals (kinda ugly and it seems as the dev didn't even try to improve it) I would recommend other games

The fact that many cr1tics rated the game 100/100 or very close to it should make you think. The game is undone. No balance to find, waay too much randomness for a supposed strategy game. Regarding McMillen, this game is truly heartbreaking. After Legend of Bumbo flopped, then was never fixed, this is the second fail. It is a fail. But critics vote it 100/100 .... I think this quote says it best: "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain."
