With obvious criticisms aside, a game such as Just Dance 2021 could very well be the medicine we need to help provide some form of normality to this year’s holiday season. Having the under-appreciated privilege of joyfully dancing and laughing next to a Christmas tree within the isolated bubble of our loved ones not only boosts morale, but it also opens up to the realisation of how incredibly fortunate some of us are to have others to share that little bubble with.

Put on your dancing shoes ’cause Just Dance 2021 is here to show you how to move. With superb visuals and varied choreography, it’s only a lack of online play and a limited core song list that hold it back.

Just Dance 2021 follows the classical formula of Ubisoft's successful series and while it doesn't tread outside of its usual conventions, it proves once again that this is one of the best designed party games out there. It misses, however, in one crucial aspect - despite the possibility to pair up with players around the world for tournament play, it lacks an online component that would put friends playing against each other. With that in mind, Ubisoft's subscription service widely expands the catalogue of songs and the fitness option, as well as kid-friendly mode, are two very welcome components.

Ubisoft offers us one more year what many fans are waiting for: hours of dancing in front of our screen with the new song list. Although the game does not include many new features compared to previous games, it does welcome some new content.

Just Dance 2021 is not a revolution but a confirmation, like every year. But, like every year, he also reiterates that his is a winning formula, which shows no sign of fading.

Just Dance 2021 just keeps doing the good things that the previous titles of the series were doing, without offering many innovations.

Whether Just Dance 2021 is worth purchasing will depend entirely on how players felt about the previous title. Those who love the series will find plenty of little improvements and a great library of new songs and dance routines. More casual players might find it isn’t worth splashing out on the latest release when they can happily stick with the older game, especially with Just Dance Unlimited providing such a wide array of extra tracks. However, anyone who has been looking for the perfect opportunity to jump in and try out the series will find no better time than now.

Just Dance 2021 is a solid entry in the franchise, though it might get stale next year if things don’t change. However, its improved performance and bombastically entertaining song list will still get you on the dance floor this time around.

This title certainly marks the next phase of Just Dance, and it makes baby steps towards innovation. If you were hoping Just Dance 2021 would revolutionize the franchise as a whole, well, you will be disappointed there. The game feels and functions much like recent entries from 2019 and 2020. Still, its challenging choreography and updated features are sure to please newcomers and diehard dancers all the same.

Just Dance 2021 isn't the most innovative game in the franchise, but in some key areas, it definitely excels. I picked up the game on launch day, Nov. 12, 2020 for the Nintendo Switch because I own every mainline game before this and had a good time with almost every one of them. Let's start this review off with the menu. The menu itself looks & functions pretty much the exact same is it did in Just Dance 2019 and Just Dance 2020 which isn't surprising at all because Ubisoft graces us with a new menu every 3 games most of the time, so maybe we'll see a fresh menu in Just Dance 2022 next year. You got your usual controlling methods: Joy-Con for Nintendo Switch, PS Camera & PS Move Controller for PS4, Kinect for Xbox One and Phone via the Just Dance Controller app for Stadia, Xbox Series X | S and PS5. Unfortunately yes, this game doesn't make use of the PS5's camera or the previous camera or even the PS Move Controller which is a big disappointment, since all of them are compatible with Sony's next-gen console. Anyway, back to the menu: in the settings you can turn off the "Related Songs" which removes the Recommended Songs line in the Songs tab and the related songs after you finish a song, which I turned off at an instant because I didn't like it in the last game. Then we have the new score screen which I like very much. It's so good, it's like you're playing the WDF (World Dance Floor) alone; you can see how many Perfects, Supers, Good, OKs and Xs you got which makes doing better in a song more rewarding than just telling you the score. Superstar and Megastar is still here and can be achieved by scoring 11000 and 12000 points respectively on any song, however, I would've like Ubisoft to add a new "-star" for scoring 13000 points, because the max points you can earn for any song is a bit over 13000 so achieving 13K would feel more rewarding in my opinion. It's a shame the end screen is the same when you're in sweat mode. I love the new score screen so much, I just don't use sweat mode at all, whereas I was only using that in JD2020; I'm sure they could have put the calorie count somewhere on the new score screen. Now something that I really don't like: the exclusion on the Catalog sorting. Changing this makes me think that Ubisoft hasn't heard the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". I get that they don't want to release the same game, therefore some changes need to be made, but they could have changed many more things (e.g.: dark mode, a new color theme instead of purple & pink, private online rooms for playing with friends, etc.). They brought this "Pertinence" sorting to this game which is supposed to put the songs you play most on the front and to be fair, it mostly does exactly that. I mainly play Extremes, and all the extremes are in the first 3 lines, however, my least played Extreme is at the very 1st place which is odd considering that I've only played it a total of 2 times and Blinding Lights, - which was the 2nd place - 10 or maybe 20 times that number. The feature would be a welcome one in my view if - and only if - Catalog was still available. Now, enough about the menu, I'll talk about the core of the game: the choreos. The choreographies in this game are definitively harder than any previous games' dances were. Of course, the ones labeled 'Low' when you activate sweat mode are the same difficulty as every song in that category, but even 'Medium' difficulty songs have gotten harder; not significantly, just noticeably. The song list itself is decent and in some ways better than any one before this game in the franchise. Of course, the 'obligatory' popular songs are here - Blinding Lights, Say So, Rain On Me, etc - that would appeal to most people. There is as expected more KPOP for the lot of fans who like the genre. After that, there are the songs that not many people have heard of - Zenit, Georgia, Bailando, etc. - and everything else in between. This time there are 9 Extremes which is a great thing because I love Extremes, so satisfying when I learn an Extreme choreo fully considering how hard and fast they are. Like every game, a new hardest song arises, and this time, in my opinion, it's Kick It. No matter how tiring Yameen Yasar is, it will always be Kick It for me. The backgrounds are absolutely stunning. They're straight out beautiful and amazing to look at, the team have really outdone themselves with the backgrounds and no more lazily done checkerboard Extreme backgrounds! I'm so grateful for these I can't even express it. Let's address the elephant in the room: The WDF in many people's eyes is a huge downgrade from any Just dance game that had one (2014 - 2021). To be fair, their disappointment is completely justified; there's no Song Vote, Boss Battle, Team Battle, only Tournaments all day long. I myself on the other hand rarely go on the WDF and when I do, Tournaments were my favorite mode, so this really isn't a big deal for me.

Offers nothing new from previous titles except new music tracks. The major hit music tracks are behind expensive renewal subscription service. If you don't fall for the subscription, the game will continously advertise it to you during the gameplay.
