It has its ups and downs and the lack of the promised online play at launch is disappointing, but Backyard Baseball's return is an overall good time no matter your age.

Backyard Baseball (2026) is not struggling in terms of being a modern-looking reimagining of a ’90s classic. And it is rounding the bases easily as a bridge between generations. However, the gameplay experience needs some more time in the batting cage before this new experience receives the title of being a hit. Clunky controls and a batting situation that is either far too easy or inexplicably hard are currently holding things back. And with a $52 price tag, this is just as expensive as seeing an actual baseball game, which is wild for the current entertainment proposition. There’s a Hall of Famer here; it’s just not quite here yet.

Backyard Baseball does what I feel it sets out to do. It took me back to yesteryear and the fond memories of pickup games with my friends at a dusty lot behind the park. It also reminded me of how charmed I was when a humble desktop computer game tried to capture that very spirit way back when. This 2026 version of Backyard Baseball isn’t perfect. Some computer behavior could be tightened, I wish they’d made some new kids to go with our faves, and we need online multiplayer, stat. That said, the strategy, depth, and, most importantly, vibes are all there in respectable fashion. Whether you want to introduce a young fan to baseball sims or pick this up for some fond memories, Backyard Baseball will serve up good RBI for the price of admission.
