I am a big fan of this game. While most see it as just an All Stars wannabe that failed to meet expectations, I see it as a game that had a purpose and served it well. Battlegrounds was supposed to be a game to tide the fans over until 2K22, and it did just that. It had fun gameplay, simple controls, and was all in all a fun game to play until WWE 2K22 dropped. The attires are great, and there’s a lot in the game. Unfortunately, that’s about where the good ends. The creation suite is very lackluster. Even No Mercy’s create-a-superstar mode had more depth than this. Plus, you have to spend to get more slots. Why? Money, obviously! The whole point of the game is playing matches to earn Battle Bucks, which you can spend on wrestlers, attires, CAS slots, CAA (create-an-arena) slots, and power-ups. You could also just spend real money and get a different currency, and buy everything that way, too. Basically, this game is WWE and 2K’s answer to micro transactions taking over games instead of just being there (that is, before MyFaction would be introduced in 2K22 and become the main focus of attention). The career mode is hot garbage. It’s just playing matches with severely underpowered characters to unlock power ups and Battle Bucks. Honestly, I’m pretty sure that not many people chose this instead of 2K19 during that break between 2K20 and 2K22, though it is still quite fun to come back to every once in a while.

This is the greatest video game ever released. I don’t need to say more. Go play this game, it is worth it.

I can see why other people like this game, but it’s just not for me. Everything moves way too quickly for me to keep up well, the controls are odd at best (and cheaper than the original NBA Jam at worst), and there isn’t that much to do other than just play matches and create people. Speaking of the creation suite, it’s the best part of this game, yet it still is very bad. If you only make original characters, then maybe you can do what you want to do and make someone who looks good. However, if you want to recreate actual people, you’re out of luck. There’s minimal clothing parts, the hairstyles aren’t very good, and the entrance creator is nearly nonexistent, with only a few generic motions and theme songs to choose from, though the entrances of the wrestlers in the game can be unlocked. The roster is paper thin, only featuring maybe 30 total men and 0 women. The campaign modes are both just playing matches, with nothing much in between. All in all, if you want an arcade-style WWE game, go for WWE 2K Battlegrounds. That game has a much bigger roster, smoother and less janky gameplay, and is overall a better experience.

Generally overhated, though it’s definitely not without faults. The AI is an idiot at best, and there isn’t too terribly much to do as far as the campaign mode (which is just playing matches that get progressively harder). The gameplay itself is simple, yet it has some charm to it that makes for a fun experience. Overall a great way to kill time, but don’t expect anything like No Mercy.
