Nomadland9

Sometimes we lose the people we hold in our hearts. Without them we are nomads and endlessly look for what we have lost. In all its simplicity this is a fantastic film about the quest to give a lost love a place in our lives. It is not a sad film, it is even hopeful. Frances McDormand is (as always) fantastic.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom6
Dec 18, 2020
Ma Rainey disappointed me. Probably because I was expecting a film about Ma Rainey's life. It is not. It is more like a day in the life of Ma Rainey. A film (and actually a screened play) about racial contradictions. Relevant, but not the biography I wanted to see. The leading role is actually not for Viola Davis (Ma Rainey) but for Chadwick Boseman (Levee). Great acting, beautiful atmosphere, though.

David Byrne’s American Utopia7
Nov 1, 2020
This is a successful registration of a stage show by David Byrne, but it is not a documentary, because the makers do not add a lot to that theatre performance. But the stage show itself is great (and beautiful to watch).

Dick Johnson Is Dead8

What a beautiful moving film about farewell. Touching, but not sentimental. Down to earth, but because of the highly original approach also pleasantly surprising.

On the Rocks5

The story is too simple, and therefore too shallow. The only reason that I have completely finished this film is Bill Murray. Of course he's good again, but that's actually too little.

The Trial of the Chicago 79

What a great film this is. Gone before I knew it and I was sorry that it was over. This is a film set in the US, but it is a universal story about power and democracy. Fantasically acted, tight script, great directing. Top film.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always7

There's obviously a lobby going on not to like this movie. But it's a good movie. Told modestly, acted naturally. About the luck that sometimes people can be helped when they're faced with a difficult choice.

The idea behind this film is interesting, only the film itself isn't. Too bad.

Left full rudder. War, a boat, a captain, an enemy. Will they manage to escape, will they fulfill their task? Anyway, a lot of action and still boring.

Live your life to the max, is the lesson learned in this beautiful film about an unlikely friendship.

Agnieszka Holland is a gifted director. Expect another very atmospheric film, with beautiful camera work. Even more important: a convincing film that shows the importance of good journalism and how we should always be aware of political propaganda.

Every once and awhile I watch this film again. Is it really one of the best films I have seen, ever? Yes it is.

This Spike Lee Joint really disappointed me. It is so extremely violent, and I keep asking myself: why?

Impressive story, beautifully filmed, but too slow (specially the first hour)
