The movie works for perhaps 60 or 70 % of the time. But a ridiculous, nonsensical ending and other clumsy plot devices make the movie only average. Some work on the plot and the ending would have made it a dramatically better movie.

Laughably dreadful. Wooden acting, terrible CG, a script that is on par with the **** and Jane books for depth. Simply unwatchable without laughing. Left after about 15 minutes as I would have been shouting at the screen. 87 from Metacritic ? 8.7 from me.

A steaming hot mess. I am not sure that with an outline of what was happening, I would even know. All noise and action and no real character or plot development. Great to look at and listen to but ultimately, completely empty. Entertaining if you don't need a story.

This movie is good but it's not 95 good as the aggregate score of the critics has it now as I write this review. Saw it at a film fest and it wasn't even the best film I saw there. In the bottom 3rd of the films I saw.

Simply required watching for any thinking citizen. Skewers all or virtually of the for profit media outlets and answers the question : "How did the idiot known as Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election ?" You are being lied to by the mainstream media and that will go on until you insist that it stop.

DO NOT GO TO THIS MOVIE. Extraordinarily bad. Whoever imagined that having Annette Bening scowl at people from the screen for 90 minutes would be entertaining needs to be fired. Pretentious, boring and extremely dumb. Can't imagine that the critics actually saw this film. So bad.

Riveting from start to finish. Cinematography to die for. Leo completely wrong for the lead role but still nails it. The acting, the story, the adventure. Going to probably win all the rewards.

Easily the DUMBEST movie I have watched in decades. The "science" on this one is PREPOSTEROUS and should make anyone associated with the movie ashamed. I realize that the audience for this kind of drivel is NOT very bright but CMON.

Very hard to watch but no less brilliant for that. Difficult people living through very difficult times captured for us to see. Excellent acting, plotting and cinematography add up to a great movie and one that any serious film fan should see.

The critical reviews are well above the actual merit of this film. It's a decent film but not an 87. Maybe a 60 + / -. The initial scenes leading to the sex are ridiculously bad. Whoever wrote them did a terrible job. No 15 or 16 year old girl would talk or act that way. Those scenes are just preposterous and certainly affected my view off the rest of the film. The scenes where the mother found out and reacted were also preposterous and badly written. Again, no adult woman cuckolded like this would react in those ways. An interesting story in spite of the key scenes that made no sense. The actress in the lead role did a good job and was believable and likable much of the time. The 2 adult leads were pretty lightweight and their parts were quite undeveloped and 2 dimensional. Might be worth a trip to the cheap cineplex but not as a first run movie. And don't go for Kristen Wiig. She sleep walked her way through this one.

Why does Hollywood do such a bad job of turning fairly promising raw materials into a decent movie ? A decent premise, some likable characters and some likable actors to play those characters. The resulting movie is slow and directionless and the characters have roughly the depth of cardboard. If you are 70+ and female you may be able to relate. Everyone else needs to stay well away.

Surely has to be one of the best films of the year with one of the best film performances of the year as well. Not a movie for someone who needs a Hollywood movie with a nonsensical story and name stars. The acting, the story, the cinematography, the sets and the settings are to die for. Mike Leigh has hit this one out of the park on every level. Can't believe how good it was.

A remarkable movie for an American movie. If you are looking for the hallmarks of a typical American movie like fart jokes, juvenile humor, meaningless nudity or super heroes, this is the wrong movie. Wonderful story, wonderful performances. Probably the best American movie of the year.

A dreadful movie. The story line went from preposterous to idiotic over the course of the movie in true Hollywood fashion. The sociopathic instructor would not be teaching at any reputable university and would likely be in jail for assault or hate speech. Spoiler alert - the hero not only survives a t bone collision with a big truck that flips his car but goes on to give the performance of his life while dripping blood. Seriously ?

Dreadful Hollywood crap. Completely unbelievable. I don't know how something this bad gets made. I realize it is full of faces people will recognize but it is still crap.

A wonderful, understated movie and a great performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. I wondered why they would have put him in a role where he was supposed to be German but he carried off well. Not a Bond movie full of ridiculous stunts and explosions but a Le Carre movie full of what real spy work looks like presumably. If you are hoping for a lot of action and sex, this is not the movie for you. A fitting final role for one of the best actors in recent memory.

A good movie but not a great one. Sympathetic characters, great acting and a good story to tell. The last 3rd of the movie wanders and the ending seems pasted on like many American movies. Ultimately worth a watch.

Contrived Hollywood story falls flat on its face about 2 3 of the way through the movie followed by 20 or 30 minutes of nothing and a completely implausible ending pasted on at the very end. The casting is awful, the ex's are all intolerable and the dialogue is frequently bad. This movie will be remembered only as Gandolfini's last role in about 15 seconds.

All of the elements are here (a decent story idea likable characters great scenery to add to the look of the movie), the movie is just poorly made. Tighter writing and editing would have resulted in a completely different movie that would have been much more engaging. The main story line is enough but for some reason the writer director felt the need to include several sub plots in the movie that either detract from the main story or make absolutely no sense in relation to the main story. A miss that could have been a big hit.

The entire movie made no sense. Many of the scenes were equally nonsensical and Joaquin Phoneix's entire role was unnecessary. Don't know what the critics saw or if they are afraid of the director but this movie is junk.

Completely empty and meaningless. If you are a sheep, go to this movie. Otherwise, almost any movie in any theatre will be better than this one. Awful.

Endlessly long and muddled. Could have been dramatically shorter with better writing and editing. Completely improbable plot changes and ending. I wanted to get up repeatedly and walk out but the theatre was quite full and that would have distracted other movie patrons. DO NOT SEE this movie based on the reviews shown here. This is NOT a very good movie.
