Paper Mario: The Origami King0
Aug 9, 2020
The humor and writing is decent, the aesthetic is pretty good, colourful and engaging and the battles, while somewhat repetitive are actually ok. The main problem with the game is that it's just kind of boring and many parts - random challenges, non-logical puzzles - actually get quite grating after a while. This is a game that I enjoy less and less the more I play it. If you can get it for half price or borrow it from someone then it's probably worth it, however don't spend $60 on it like I did, it's not worth that.

This is a really good game, your enjoyment of which will depend on how comfortable you are at losing through little to no result of how well you played. It's very much a semi-text based/resource management RNG adventure with some great writing but unless you go in prepared for that you're likely to get annoyed with losing all your progress because RNG dictates that even though you're mining a star for hydrogen you will get a tiny amount thus ending your run. It's a star. They're literally made from hydrogen. Anyway, if you're prepared to lose and happy to enjoy the trip then it's a good game. Otherwise probably avoid.

There is a decent game in here but it's just mired underneath multiple layers of tedious repetition and grinding and some completely unnecessary difficulty spikes. Difficulty does not equal fun. Many of the enemies give cheap hits, they'll be hiding just out of sight, or behind some bushes or some such other cheapness. Other times the game will let you see the enemy but won't let you lock on as there's a tiny bit of scenery - like a cable - in the way. Difficulty through cheapness does not equal fun. This game, like so many others of it's ilk could be more fun but chooses to be 'hardcore' to its detriment.

I bought it when then micro-transactions have been removed but honestly it's still kind of boring. There is a lot of repetition and it all feels just a bit less exciting than the first game. The main character. So annoying. You start the game thinking that he's all acrobatic but the more you play the more you will realised that actually he's a clumsy oaf who much prefers to continuously roll up against walls than climb them or stubbornly refuse to let go or not climb a wall when you want him too. The story. Who cares? Unless you're a direct descendant of JRR Tolkien himself or an actual elf it's not very interesting. Yeah, for 13 bucks its tolerable for a period but don't expect to get any long term enjoyment out of this game.

So this is a decent game but anyone looking for a casual game needs to look elsewhere. The graphics are good and everything runs smoothly on the switch but what you need to keep in mind is that this is a puzzle game and it's a puzzle game that relies solely on memory. You will die. You will die a lot. No, really, you will die A LOT and the game is more than happy to punish you for not being able to see the future. And then it's more than happy to punish you when you don't perform the perfect combination of button presses. When the games speed ramps up, and it does, you will have the tiniest fraction of a second to pull off the perfect move again and again and again till you either die (honestly the most likely outcome) or you hit a checkpoint. It's a bit infuriating but I suppose that's the draw? Additionally, I got it on sale for 9.99 and that feels more like a fair price than the RRP of 29.99. Overall, it's ok, pretty and the game-play loop is tolerable but it is a difficult game that you'll have to sink time into in order to become halfway decent.

So the core mechanics of this game - the RTS vibe - are great but what's missing is a sense of progression. I know that this is supposed to be a roguelike and what comes with that is the frankly unnecessary difficulty, random stages and starting again but after an hour or so it's just doing the same thing over and over again. I like the game, a lot, however there is only so many times you can do essentially the same thing without any actual progress or development.

Glaive: Brick Breaker2

What a dull game. I even like this kind of brick breaker type of game but this one, ****, it just keeps on giving but what its giving is tedium wrapped in janky gameplay with poor ball physics and levels that take Sisyphean amounts of determination to get through. Just having a line of bricks that take a ton of hits to remove isn't fun. I mean, it's not torture either. Its like repeatedly stepping on a lego brick. It hurts but you can handle it. The question is why are you continuing to step on that brick? Just stop, and that's what you should do with this game. Just stop. In fact stop before you buy it.

This isn't likely to be the kind of game you think it is. It's a puzzle game where there is literally only one correct way and if you don't find that singular correct way then you're buggered. It's annoying to get stuck again and again and again and again because there is only one unique way to correctly finish a level; also, you can forget about skipping as you get a TINY amount of options to do that which doesn't' lie well with the actual difficulty of some of the levels. This game is just an irritation, one you'd be better to not inflict on yourself.

This game can be summed up as 100 hours of a cat telling you what to do. You think you're going to get a huge world with a wide variation of what you can do but really you can ONLY do EXACTLY what the game wants you to do. The choices are an illusion. Visually it looks great and the combat is for the most part quite enjoyable but the story, Jesus, what a pile of **** and when coupled with some really crappy mechanics (despair I'm looking at you) and some completely unnecessary design choices (Mmm, I'm a mouse now; oh its a crappy airlock maze) they all combine to **** the fun out of the game. I'm at the last stage and can barely keep myself going it's such a slog. This game could do with being about half the size and it would be a lot tighter and benefit the whole experience.

The core of this game isn't bad, it has been done better in a lot of other places though. The main issue with this game is that luck plays an incredibly large part in whether or not you are successful in a level. This may be OK for the first few levels but when you're down to the last few and the skill you have gained through playing takes a backseat to luck, it makes for a rather annoying game. It's not that you lose, it's just that you're not lucky enough to win. Or maybe you're super lucky in which case don't waste your time playing this game, go buy a lottery ticket.

Tedium. Repetition. Tedium. Repetition. Those four words basically sum up this game in its entirety. It is a substandard platformer that, while having a reasonably interesting premise around 'Knack' being able to grow etc, etc, it's literally the extent of the imagination on show here. I got it free with PS Plus (thankfully as paying for it is a waste of money, unless it's 2.99) and I've completed it and recommend that you don't. Game-play is dull and all of the 'good' characters are unlikable. I think that 'Knack' suffers from Stockholm syndrome as he does exactly as he's told, unquestioningly, he's got a real weird relationship going on with that professor. And to all the people on here who gave it a 10. I want to give you all a hug as you have all obviously experienced some immense trauma in your life if you feel that this game is perfect. Don't let your damaged outlook hurt you any more. I hope you are ok.

Yeah, this game isn't as good as you think it's going to be. It's more sadistic than hard but not in an especially good way. The difficulty curve is high, there's no other way to put it, which can be fun with the right implementation but this is where it falls down. You'll do something difficult, feel pleased that you did it but then you'll have to do exactly the same thing another two or three times in a row. Repetition is boring but when something is difficult and repetitive it gets frustrating and **** any fun out of the game. The upgrades are very limited (think armor and magnet to draw things in, that's essentially it), there is only about 7-10 enemies in the game, repeated throughout and the writing and attempts at jokes aren't even cringe-worthy, they're just bad. Overall, this game is hard and repetitive but not fun. If you're happy to plough your time into doing the same thing over and over again without any reward I suggest working in a North Korean coal mine instead.

I really wanted to like this game, interesting art style, procedurally creates levels, etc., but it is impossible. Imagine a game that takes no effort to give you any guidance, not even the absolute minimal instructions, controls that are clumsy and such a poor variety of enemies (or actually even things to do) that it wouldn’t be out of place being free-to-play. Imagine how annoying and frustrating that would be. This game is poor, it’s a low level attempt to do something greater; an aspiration that it does not achieve at all. Your money and time are much better spent elsewhere.

My God. This game is an utter stank pile of crap. I know that there is a somewhat semi-decent game in there but it is the very worst kind of chore to play. GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! GRIND! DIE! Do not expect to enjoy it unless you have a strong predilection for self harm. Easily the most annoying game I have ever bought, and that's saying a lot. DO NOT BUY.

There's not many options for good arcade racers on the PS4 and this simply continues that trend. The controls is pretty fudgey and lacking any kind of precision, the map is small and not overly exciting at the best of times and finally the police. They're insanely aggressive, so much so that it actually ruins the game. The idea of being chased loses all appeal when five of them appear out of no where and demolish your car. It's cheap and you will get annoyed. I didn't buy this full price and for that I am glad. There is some enjoyment to be had but it is heavily tempered with annoyance and frustration so if you have the patience of a saint and it's heavily discounted then go for it, otherwise avoid.
