Fatal Frame III: The Tormented

Possibly the scariest game in the Fatal Frame series, and my favourite in regards to colour choices and art direction. With more of a slower paced story where you have 'down time" back home instead of being trapped in a manor or village, you get a different vibe with The Tormented. A welcome one for someone like myself that enjoys horror games as their comfort and happy place. Weird as it may sound to say that. With a return of heavy focus on puzzles, combat, exploration, stealth sections, and most noteably; the scary enemies and atmosphere that was diminished in Fatal Frame 2. Fatal Frame 3 is as true to the series roots as possible. Yet, it has its shortcomings... I mentioned the stealth sections. That's not for everyone. Many turn away from a game for having them, but while they're not great, there's no need to worry. They're fine. What's not so great is the bloat. The game is rather long. I'd say around 3-4 chapters too long as you'll find yourself repeating the same locations for 13 hours before the game reaches its end. Many of these locations you'll revisit were used for a different puzzle just an hour earlier. With similar enemies appearing, and no real changes to the Manor Of Sleep to keep you on your toes. Fatal Frame 3 is a caps the PS2 era of Fatal Frame off with a remarkable game. Though it doesn't reach the emotional highs of Fatal Frame 2, the return of the horror atmosphere with the amazing music and art direction will have you praise this title as one of the best in the horror genre.

Fatal Frame 2 is in many ways a big improvement over the original Fatal Frame. Better locatons, far better story (best in the franchise), just as good if not better puzzles, music, main characters, side characters, bit characters, the lasting impact Fatal Frame 2 will have on you when you've beaten the game. Everything is better. All except one element' the horror.... The key element to a horror game. Now, that might sound like this makes the game fall flat on its face despite everything I just said was improved over the original, but while it is a flaw, it is a flaw I am more than happy to accept if it means the Fatal Frame 2 we know remains as is. I wouldn't change a thing if it risks hurting the rest of this incredible experience. The horror (and the awful movement speed) are the weakest points. The original Fatal Frame had ghosts look demontic and otherworldly, even had some floating heads. Fatal Frame 2 has Villager #1, #2, #3, #4 with sticks and pitch forks attacking you in repeated straight forward movements. Big let down. But ultimately none of that matters because at the end of the day you'll walk into that final room, stare down the ending in sight, and know you've made a core memory. Fatal Frame 2 may be the greatest game in the Fatal Frame series, and one of the best games of the Survival Horror genre. It has a lasting effect and is a serious must own for horror fans. You need this game.

Fatal Frame / Project Zero. One of the scariest survival horror games you'll play. Japanese style "Ringu", "The Grudge" inspired enemies and stories with "Resident Evil" puzzles, exploration, and fixed camera angles. With atmosphere so heavy you'll play with the lights on and still need breaks every few minutes you're bound to sweat off a few pounds by time you reach the credits. However, Fatal Frame isn't a perfect game. The biggest weakness of this otherwise masterpiece is the character movement. A common complaint you'll still hear today regarding the series. The protagonist Miku moves a snails pace, and dodges attacks even slower. She's a teenage girl, but with the movement speed of a toddler. It makes the backtracking and ladder climbing taxing as you'll find yourself returning to old areas rather often. Not an issue in Silent Hill or Resident Evil as they have fast movement, but in Fatal Frame you're looking at two minutes of walking back to a room you were just at earlier. Besides that, the other biggest weakness is the games length problem mixed in with the lack of freshness as you continue Miku's horror adventure. By the end of the game you'll have been in and out of every room donzens of times to a point where you'll wish it was over. Fear can only last so long before the immersion is weakened and you wonder why the developers thought reusing the same location but now with blood stains on the floor was going to keep players engaged. It's okay to shorten a game for pacing purposes. The unneeded bloat does nothing but harm the experience. Finally; i'll keep this short: The story ****. It's really bad. Amazing in Fatal Frame 2 and Fatal Frame 3... **** in this original. You'll be more angry at some characters for their choices than you will any other emotion. Still, that's not the point of the game. The puzzles, mansion, scares, combat, music, art direction... they're all amazing. Fatal Frame is a top shelf MUST for any survival horror fans. If you are looking to get your hands dirty and experience more of this genre than you start here alongside the original Resident Evil's and Silent Hill's.

Not much to say about the original Resident Evil 4 that hasn't been said a million times, but is it rather simply the greatest video game of all time alongside Metal Gear Solid. The gameplay is addictive, the atmosphere, music, tone, the characters and how they are voiced. RE4 is a masterpiece beyond masterpieces and its energy hasn't been matched by anything since. Far better than the remake, far better than its peers. Resident Evil 4 changed gaming and still leads by example. 10/10 forever.

Fast and responsive gameplay, with some great levels and a beautiful art direction to the game. The spirit of the show isn't perfectly captured, but it's a fun ride as a fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The downsides are some overly janky gameplay sections such as having to jump over an invisible trigger that instantly causes a game over with a character that can barely jump, some awful boss fights, bland music, bad voice acting, and by the end you'll tire of the enemies. Plus one creepy glitch commonly found in The Mall mission where you'll stake a vampire and walk away only to hear the vampire call your name, as it respawned with zero health and attacks you again. Creepy. Chaos Bleeds is solid. If you're looking for a fun to play, slightly jank experience then it's for you. Certainly one of the better TV-video game tie ins the Playstation 2 has to offer.
